Guest guest
These are all little things. No big project or anything like that. But, the experiences are really great spiritual lessons and uplifting to both in an exchange hard to label who gives and who takes? Hope you find these inspirational. When we started, we used to ask " Are you homeless? " Then one fellow advised us " Why ask that? Simply ask `are you thirsty, hungry? Could you use a hat, scarf, mittens, socks? " We noticed that some do not have socks even in the winter. With a little experience we learned to recognize more or less the " homeless. " And we always pray to Amma to guide us who to give to and keep us and the homeless safe. Whenever we go to Philly or NYC we give a little food, clothing, money. One day, I gave a pasta meal and water worth about $3 (homemade by Samarpana ) and the fellow gave me $10 as a " donation for the homeless " he said. Later, when all the pasta meals were finished, we noticed a fellow rummaging through a trash can and I gave him the $10 for a meal; he was all smiles. At the NYC Penn Railroad Station, a lady noticed us giving something to a homeless person, who was rummaging a trash can for food. She asked, " What did you just do? Give him something? What mission do you belong to? Who do you represent? " After a moment of silence, the response came, " We just give! " and back to silence. It seemed to register something in her as she walked away without any further questions. Actually, I was surprised myself by our response, because normally we would say perhaps too much. Maybe it was Amma's Response? Another time we gave a few clothing items to a homeless person who was waiting for a Charity Health Care Center to open up. Apparently, he was mugged and stabbed; he showed us his stitches; he was recovering well and quite cheerful. Samarpana gave him a few dollars more. He was overjoyed saying " You don't know what you have done for me! " And he started blessing us that we should win $153million lottery. It is as if a few dollars was enough for him but that somehow we needed more. That's why I say " Who is giving to whom? And who is the underprivileged? " Amma Bless, Amarnath " It is not how much you give, but how much love you put into the giving. " ~ Mother Teresa of Calcutta " In the beginning, to get started, to break the habit of not giving, it's enough just to give. Just Give! expecting nothing.
