Namaskarams dear sister!! dear sister, you don't have to assume the blame for this habit...it appeared many years ago already on the Amma list, before you ever were on it.....some of the " old hands " had been using that abbreviation for a very long time....we also have been getting it in letters from satsang leaders in reference to satsange events and such....it is just as Swamiji says a spreading communicable " disease " ...which has been slowly gaining momentum for " convenience " sake....just like many other computer abbreviations, many of which are equally ugly...although not necessarily so adharmic...for example " u " for you. i haven't like to see that abbreviation ever since i first saw it....it just seemed too " convenient " and NOT very respecftul of the Mantra....in fact it even took me a while to understand what these folks were trying to say with this ONS nonsense, but it didn't really feel right to use it...so i never have up until now...i much prefer the entire mantraa, as you may have noticed in my postings... in Amma's Love, and in Her Service, as ever, your own Self, visvanathan Om Amrtesvaryai Namah! Guest guest
Mantra and Uchharana ( chanting) are inseperable. It is not only important to know the whole mantra but even correct " Uchharana " is critical. I think most of the people may be involuntarily this. But it is important that learned people around Amma should educate others. Guest guest
What's next, putting (pranava) instead of " Om " ? That's what orthodox Vaishnava's do because they feel it's disrespectful to write it onscreen. Oh Puhleeeeeeez... Guest guest
Jai Ma I have a feeling (but no evidence one way or the other) that the email from Big Swami is a hoax. A little voice tells me he has a lot bigger things to think about than the appropriate use of some abbreviations. I could be wrong (and usually am). I think it is not a hoax, but a serious point, basically about putting Divine first, literally not abbreviating divine Names, which is symbolic for the way most people relate to it in this world, as secondary (if that). The idea of keeping focus, constant remembrance with full concentration, full presence, that Amma speaks about. I agree there are many serious problems in the world, but to take it to its logical extension, what then is japa? those Om Nama Shivaya salutations are a form of it... Guest guest
To my brother, Advait, I would never perpetrate a hoax. And to all others who replied - I think Big Swami makes a good point, and that is to be conscientious in every thing we do, even the little things, like abbreviating a sacred mantra in our cyber-missives. It all counts, and every grain of sand She knows. The mind can come up with many responses, critcisms, and outright resistance, but in the final analysis, I think he's right. Just my two centavos! Guest guest
Om Amriteswaryai Namah, I also confirmed with an official source - the email is legitimate. I was very saddened to see the disrespectful and rude tone being taken by some towards Big Swamiji. It seems to me that even someone who is deeply involved in helping with very serious problems the world over has the right to take a moment to gently correct people on a relatively smaller concern. Guest guest
My apologies for laughing at the presumed hoax. I think all of you have a good point that we should take the mantra seriously, and not reduce it to acronyms. There is a reason why Amma asks us to say the name of the divine when addressing one another Om Namah Sivayah Madhurima On Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 7:11 AM, Pranada S. <daughterpranada wrote: > Om Amriteswaryai Namah, > > I also confirmed with an official source - the email is legitimate. > > I was very saddened to see the disrespectful and rude tone being taken by > some towards Big Swamiji. Namaskarams!!!! i agree whole heartedly with the above comment...it IS saddening to see such skeptical criticisms all the time, even when someone such as Sw. Amrtaswarupanandaji is asking us to just be a little more careful with our writings...everything that we do, every thought we have, all of it contributes to our entire being, and if we have this skeptical " who cares " attitude about such topics, why then would we care about the " much more serious " topics which other folks opined should be concentrated upon...if we can get the Japa properly done, then perhaps Mother's light will flood our consciousness such that ALL our actions and thoughts will be suffused with this light, and then such empty headed scepticism will be seen for what it is....ADHARMIC. in my mind it is INSULTING to the Panchakshari Mantra, and indeed to Lord Siva Himself, to refer to the mantra as ONS....just how difficult is it to actually WRITE OUT the ENTIRE three words???? it might take all of a few milliseconds longer.....unless of course you are a one finger typist...........in which case a few milliseconds even longer. i am very glad to have seen this letter from Sw. Amrtaswarupanandaji...it confirms my own feelings (which i have had since the first time i saw it!) of annoyance and disgust at this cheap and disrespectful practice.....but then i guess you might have noticed what a stickler for protocol and mantras i am...beginning and ending each letter with Mother's mantra......i certainly wouldn't want to write that in abbreviation......and i haven't noticed ANYONE doing that....only poor Lord Siva has to suffer this insult to His Honour...... let's all hear it for the great Lord Siva...Hip Hip Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah! ooooops....Om Namah Sivaya! Om Namah Sivaya! Om Namah Sivaya!! in His Love, and in Hers too.... as ever, your own Self, visvanathan OM Amrtesvaryai Namah!
