Guest guest
Too Much Calcium? Not Enough Magnesium? Negative Calcium Balance? Calcium, Magnesium and Stress: Calcium and Magnesium are two different sides of a coin. Calcium excites nerves while magnesium calms them down. Calcium makes muscles contract. Magnesium is necessary for muscles to relax. Calcium is needed for blood clotting but magnesium keeps the blood flowing freely. It is easy to see that it is vital to keep these minerals in balance and that too little magnesium to balance calcium could be both uncomfortable and unhealthy. To ward off the negative effects of a prolonged stressful period, a person needs to balance calcium with adequate amounts of magnesium. Basically, we need to get adequate amounts of Calcium, but not too much. The best sources of Calcium are the GREEN veggies. Supplementation, if any should be moderate. Too much supplementation or certain foods( like dairy, etc ) could lead to an actual Negative Calcium Balance. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dietary factors that cause excessive calcium loss in the urine ( and therefore an overall negative calcium balance ): animal protein( including dairy ), salt, caffeine, refined sugar, alcohol, nicotine, aluminium containing antacids, drugs such as antibiotics, steroids, thyroid hormone, vitamin A supplements. From ~ 1) Eight independent studies listed, the first of which is: Feskanich, D, W C Willett, M J Stampfler and G A Colditz, 1996. Protein consumption and bone fractures in women. Am J Clin. Nutr. 63 (5): 492-9. 2) Read extract from " Eat to Live " by Dr. Fuhrman, MD www.joyousbirth.info/forums/archive/index.php/t-3655.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ then, we need to determine perhaps on an individual basis if we are getting enough Magnesium. Some studies show that we may actually require up to 900 mg of elemental magnesium per day! Become familiar with " Symptoms of Magnesium Deficiency " in this excellent article as that may be the easiest and practical way to tell if you are deficient : www.healthy.net/asp/templates/article.asp?PageType=Article & ID=541 For years we have been told we need plenty of Calcium and with supplements it is too easy to consume way too much; we have been also told that the ratio 2/1 Calcium/Magnesium is optimal. Well, it seems we need to take a closer look at all of this with the extra studies available: check out this info on Magnesium : http://www.best-magnesium-citrate.com/magnesium.html Amma Bless, amarnath
