Guest guest
9/27/53: Third baseman Al Rosen of the Cleveland Indians is thrown out at first base by an eyelash in his final at bat of the season and loses the American League batting title to Mickey Vernon of Washington, ..337 to .336. Even more painfully, Rosen loses out on a chance for a rare Triple Crown, having led the AL in homers (43) and RBIs (145). It's the second batting crown for Vernon - he also won in 1946 with a .353 mark. Also on 9/27/53 the St. Louis Browns played their last game ever. One of baseball's worst ever teams (wartime 1944 pennant notwithstanding), the Browns would open the 1954 season as the Baltimore Orioles, though as the '53 season was winding down there was talk of re-locating the team in Los Angeles or even Toronto. As Casey Stengle (or was it Yogi Berra?) said " you can look it up " ! Keval ______________________________\ ____ Need a vacation?
