In the wee AM hours the night before the retreat, devotees danced in choreographed Bollywood style to Amma's new, rousing bhajan. Men ( & women dressed as men in beards) danced in a circle on one side of the temple, where people usually sit on the floor. Women, ( & men dressed as women) danced in a choreographed circle on the other side of the darshan line. Some were quite talented & it was really enjoyable. At this point, I was sitting on a chair in the darshan line, which fell apart in the roudiness of the moment. It was so fun! People were standing, jumping, dancing, clapping & singing. When the bhajan finished, Amma delighted devotees by singing the same bhajan from her chair. She made a sound by rolling her divine tongue, reminicient of what's heard at some of Amma's weddings. More dancing ensued ... Our Guru really knows how to have fun! Sevites tried to bring some order afterwards, but it was never quiet the same Then an Indian family performed pada puja. There was lots of chanting & prasad of was distributed. As Amma left the hall, women standing on chairs near the temple's exit, began singing the bhajan again. Amma looked amazingly charming (well, she is Krishna afterall) as she almost began to suggest a dance, but turning slightly with her fingers raised in the air. The late nights before retreats, are often well worth staying up late with Amma! We just never know what she'll do next. You snooze, you lose. Thanks for reminding me!! She laughed sooooo hard at the dancing wildness. It felt akin to the Rasa Leela, and I was astounded by the grace (femmes and dressed-as) and athleticism (machos and dressed-as) of the dancers. More than a few times the blog at Amritapuri has commented " on the new crowd favorite " song, Mata Rani. Has anyone posted the lyrics? I have the new bhajan book somewhere around, but think it is actually at a different location than where I am currently writing from. Mother was in such a mood after the raucous celebrations and pada puja that She then called everyone who wanted to come for Darshan, with or without a token, and commenced " Indian style " rapid hugging. Eye had nestled close to the Chair, and was blessed to see the openess and gratitude with which so many approached Her for their Unexpected Darshans. The Devi Bhava the next day was a particularly soft and sweet one for me. Mother wore a turquoise-into-teal-blue sari, embroidered with pink and rose threaded flowers amidst the gold ornamentation. Somehow I had found my way to a balcony spot with an extraordinary view of the stage, and some point in the Arati song, Devi Amma shot the most beneficient and gracious smile in our direction. I don't really have words to explain it, although concepts like a shower of sweetness and a cool ray of absolute loving compassion both start to approximate the feeling. So gentle. So incredibly accepting. Later in the evening, I stood again on Her left side, against the wall, and someone brought up a bowl of his yummy organic goo balls to offer. Amma ate more than a few, and sent some prasad our way. Again, it seemed like such a petty desire to pray for, but She granted it nonetheless, with several enchanting looks of amusement.
