Guest guest
Create harmony between head, heart THRISSUR: Mata Amritanandamayi, head of the Amritanandamayi Math, has called upon people to create a harmony between the head and the heart. She was giving a discourse here on Friday as part of the anniversary celebrations of the Math's Brahmasthana Temple. " Harmony between the head and the heart helps man achieve success in life. Modern man is a victim of emotions. Emotions should be tamed with the power of intelligence, " she said. She called for a practical spiritual regimen. " Spirituality is to be practised, not preached. Many study scriptures in order to parade their knowledge. This defeats the very purpose of spirituality, " she said. A long queue of devotees waited for hours to have a `darshan' of the Mata. Mayor R. Bindu inaugurated a working women's hostel constructed by the Math. http://www.hindu.com/2007/05/05/stories/2007050510080500.htm ______________________________\ ____ Now that's room service! In all of Amma's teachings that I studied, I never heard the words " Power of Intellingence " but rather that " Love gives sharpness to the intellect " Here are some of Amma's words: 0138. " The Path of Love, otherwise known as the Path of Devotion, is the best one for Western children. Of course, this is a general statement. In the West, society is such that people, even from early childhood, are intellectual and take an intellectual approach to everything. It is the product of their 'modern' education. " - Vol.4, p143 COMMENT: If Amma actually did say something like the above report, my best guess would be that in contrast to " The Path of Love " advice to westerners, Amma is giving different advice to " some other group " which may be " too emotional " ??? Just a guess, the report is way too short and must be an extraction of a longer speech that Amma gave which I'm sure included a wider context. The reporter must have extracted just what resonated with his intellect. More of Amma's Words on the intellect, etc: 0227. " In the modern age, human minds are dry. Too much reasoning has spoiled the contem, porary mind. People use their intellects for everything. They have lost their hearts and their faith. Beauty lies in the heart. Beauty lies in faith and faith dwells in the heart. Intellect or reasoning is necessary, but we should not let it swallow the faith in us. We should not allow the intellect to eat up our heart. " - Vol.4 p248 0228. " Intellect or reasoning is necessary, but we should not let it swallow the faith in us. We should not allow the intellect to eat up our heart. Intellect is knowledge, and knowledge is ego. Too much knowledge means nothing but a big ego. The ego is a burden, and a big ego is a big burden. " - Vol.4 p248 0229. " If a person's intellect predominates, he will not be able to enjoy sweetness and beauty. Unable to penetrate the surface of things or dive deep within, he will perceive only exteriors. While sitting on the seashore, instead of enjoying the beauty of the waves and the vastness of the ocean, he will think about how the ocean came into existence. Filled with such thoughts, he will even fail to notice the gentle caress of the breeze from the sea, its expansiveness and vastness. " - Vol.4 p249 0230. " A predominately intellectual person will not be able to imbibe and experience the magic and enchantment of a moonlit night. He cannot simply appreciate something for what it is but must engage in analysis. He will try to analyze the moon as a luminous body, attempt to give a scientific explanation of the moon and how it shines. He cannot think in other terms. " - Vol.4 p249 0231. " While drinking a cup of coffee or tea, his [a predominately intellectual person] thoughts will be on how to breed a new species of coffee beans or tea leaves. He will not be able to enjoy the flavor of the tea or coffee. Thus the intellectual person who has no love in him will always miss the beauty and charm of everything that comes to him. Think of the life of such a person. Can we call it life? It is death, nothing but death. " - Vol.4 p249 0232. " Presently, the intellect predominates and there is not enough love. Therefore, we must strive to empty the intellect of useless thoughts and fill the heart with love. That is the solution for all the distress and confusion of modern society.
