Because of its proximity to India, Central Asia,and the Near East, Gandhara

became a cosmopolitan center where social, political, cultural, and artistic

expressions of many different cultures merged. The greater Gandharan area is

crossed over by the trade routes that linked China and Central Asia to Persia

and the Graeco-Roman world. This facts are critical to an understanding of

Gandharan art, both as a single, holistic entity and in terms of the spread of

Buddhism and Buddhist art eastward into China.
