In a wider sense, the term includes a large geographic region where the Gandhara culture prevailed. Gandhara was a Sanskritic Aryan region. However it has significant Yavana (i.e. Yunani or Ionian) influence. Let us examine this influence. The Yavanas had first settled in Bactria, which had given Bactria a Yavana (Greek) character. The term Yavanas as it occurs in Pali or Sanskrit literature almost always refers to " Indo-Greeks " or " Greco- Indians " who originally hailed from Bactria. The Kushanas replaced the Indo-Greek kings, but continued to use the Greek script (along with Kharoshti and Brahmi). The Yavanas continued to survive in some of the pockets of Hind for several centuries. --- End forwarded message ---
