This paper by Prof. R. Balasubramaniam on matters of traditional Indianmetrology and the case of the earth's circumference may be of interest tomembers:http://www.ias. ac.in/currsci/ feb252009/ 547.pdf

CURRENT SCIENCE, VOL. 96, NO. 4, 25 FEBRUARY 2009, pp. 547-552On the confirmation of the traditional unitof length measure in the estimates ofcircumference of the earthR. BalasubramaniamDepartment of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering,

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur 208 016, IndiaAbstract:The prevalence of two different measures for the circumferenceof the earth in Sanskrit astronomical textshas been resolved by considering the concept of a constant

angulam of 1.763 cm and the metrological tabledefined in Kautilya’s Arthasastra. The traditional measuresdefined in the

Arthasastra have been related tothe measures defined in the Ain-i-Akbari, by consideringthe same issue of circumference of the earth. Thestudy has established the connection of the traditionalunit of measure, the angulam, of the Harappan Civilization

(~2000 BC) with length measures of the Mughalperiod (AD ~1600), thereby confirming an unbrokentradition in the use of the angulam of 1.763 cm over aperiod of more than 3600 years in the Indian subcontinent.

The possible measurement units which can beused to analyse the dimensions of most engineeredstructures of the subcontinent through the ages havebeen proposed and briefly confirmed by the dimensionsof the marble platform of the Taj Mahal.
