Rao passes away It is sad to hear of Shri LS Rao's sudden passing away. He was well known tothe archaeological community and was in the limelight in recent yearsparticularly for his excavations at Bhirrana in Haryana (a Mature Harappansite with Early Harappan dates going back into the Neolithic).I was lucky to meet him a few times, including at the recent tripleconference at Bhubaneswar (December 29-31). He gave a fascinatingpresentation on a unique inscribed terracotta cake from Bhirrana (see hispaper "Does the Inscribed Terracotta Cake from Bhiranna Represent the MatureHarappan Creed?" in the last issue of _Puratattva_ , no. 38, 2008, pp.192-194). He told me that his report on Bhirrana was almost complete and hewould be moving on to other excavations (of Neolithic sites in Karnataka, ifI remember correctly). Eight days later he was no more.Regards,Michel************ ********* ********* ********* ********* ********* ********* ********* *********(From an electronic newsletter of archaeology)15.01.2009S A N A T A NEditorDr Alok TripathiYear 2.
