Lack of backward compatibility in Office 2008 for Mac

If anyone has an Apple Mac and is thinking about upgrading from Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac to the 2008 version of that application be warned before you do so that the 2008 version has no backward compatibility with earlier versions of Word for Mac. Thus, if you create a Word document in Word 2008 and send it to someone who has earlier versions of Word for Mac on their computer, they will be unable to open it. However, after an outcry from Mac users Microsoft made a free converter update available only for Mac users with the 2004 version of Office. The convertor is supposed to make it now possible for people with the 2004 version to read and edit documents created in the 2008 version. But to make this convertor work it requires those with the 2004 version of Office for Mac to download about six, of what I found as mostly unnecessary before now, updates for the 2004 version. I am at present still downloading these updates for Mac Office 2004 in the hope that, whenever I have a Word document created in the 2008 version for Mac (a 'docx' as opposed to 'doc') to send to people that still have the 2004 version I will be able to, before sending it, open and save it in the 2004 version with the convertor installed and then send it to them as a 'doc' they can read. The other alternative is that I could uninstall the 2008 version and go back to the 2004 version. Even though the application cost about $200 Microsoft have nothing on the box of the 2008 version warning about their unprecedented action of not having backward compatibility.Bruce

Quite a lot, as a few weeks ago I said I would post a referenced Word version of the email version of my idea of what I thought was the fundamental principle underlying Vedic/Hinduism was, but I now find, since upgrading to Word 2008 for Mac, that unless all other members have that version on their Mac or the 2007 version on their Windows computer they will not be able to open the document I want to post. I suppose I should recommend that everyone should run out immediately and get the latest version of Word and each give Microsoft another $200.
