The identitification of Indus civilization bovine figurines,as to whether it is a zebu or buffalo, has to be carefullylooked at.http://www.harappa.com/figurines/37.html

The bovine animal in this page is said to be a " Water buffalofigurine from Harappa. " However, comparing with zebu figures makethe buffalo ID questionable. It rather seems like a zebu figurine.http://dakshinatya.blogspot.com/2008/11/zebu-buffalo.html

In the other direction, a Mohenjo Daro (M-312) seal animal seems tobe a buffalo. I think Iravatham Mahadevan wrongly calls it a zebubull used in bull-fighting.http://www.hindu.com/2008/01/13/stories/2008011355961800.htm

Any comments? Thanks,N. GanesanPS: My letter to The Editor, The Hindu in January 2008:http://nganesan.blogspot.com/2008/01/eru-tazuval.html

IndiaArchaeology , " Paul Kekai Manansala " I have slightly updated with more ref.s., Durga as Buffalo Slayer

has excellent color pictures from south India plus Fairservis quote (Sci. Am., March 1983) and the Parpola paper on Durga as Goddess Saravati. The PDF can be downloaded from my post on Proto-Durga (M-312) seal. Also see,The megalithic symbols' connection with Indus signs is very

important. For example, prof. A. Sundara's paper. I almost finished a paper on a particular symbol that will be of interest to Buffalo culture history in India, the paper is tentatively titled: " Trisula-Nandipada-Triratna: is it originally Mahishamukha?

Buddhist symbol and its possible antecedents in Indus valley " .Regards,N. Ganesan
