Guest guest
The names Harisena and Virasena are found in the inscriptions of Guptas. Both seem to be the Ministers of War and Peace. We can allow some guessing on the connection betwen these two names, in view their resemblence. The reference to Virasena runs thus : " " He who, belonging to the Kautsa (gôtra) is well-known under the name of Shâba, (but is called) Vîrasêna by (his) family-appellation;-who knows the meanings of words, and logic, and (the ways of) mankind;-who is a poet;-and who belongs to (the city of ) Pâtaliputra,- " (Undated inscription of Chandragupta) From the above, it is known that Virasena was of Kautsa Gotra. A random search for famous personalities with such Gotra reveals that Sivabhuti is one person who belonged to this gotra. " And this poetical composition,- (the work) of the Khâdyatapâkika, the son of the Mahâdandanâyaka Dhruvabhûti, the Sâmdhivigrahika and Kumârâmatya, the Mahâdandanâyaka Harishêna, who is the slave of these same feet of the Bhattâraka, (and) whose mind is expanded by the favour of constantly walking about in (his) presence,-let it be for the welfare and happiness of all existing beings! " (Allahabad inscription of Samudragupta) From the above, it is known that Harisena is the son of Dhruvabhuti. From resemblences to these names belonging to the Kautsa gotra,(Vira sena and Sivabhuti), it may be worthwhile to search for more connections between the Ministers Virasena and Harisena. I request the kind inputs from the leaned group members. regards, Kishore patnaik
