Guest guest
Parthali was the ancient capital city of Kalingas in Orissa. Megasthenese mentions this city in his Indika : " The Prinas and the Cainas (a tributary of the Ganges) are both navigable rivers. The tribes which dwell by the Ganges are the Calingae, nearest the sea, and higher up the Mandei, also the Malli, among whom is Mount Mallus, the boundary of all that region being the Ganges. " (Megasthenes fragm. XX.B. in Pliny. Hist. Nat. V1. 21.9-22. 1.[1]) " The royal city of the Calingae is called Parthalis. Over their king 60,000 foot-soldiers, 1,000 horsemen, 700 elephants keep watch and ward in " procinct of war. " (Megasthenes fragm. LVI. in Plin. Hist. Nat. VI. 21. 8-23. 11.[2]) The other name of Ekamra Kshetras, Bhubaneswar " Prastari " is seemed to have been derived from its laterite (Makada Pathar) stone quarry. In Pali language Ra takes the form of La so the Greek writers have written Prastari as Parthal One website claims that the capital was moved to Tossali after Nandideva was defeated at the Battle of the Daya River. LATERITE BEDDING (geo-engineering correct term !). Most of the Kalingiya high rise structures have their paa bhaga embedded into this bedding. It is result of our study. Guest guest
Dear Kishore I have it that the Historical Atlas of So. Asia, 1978, [cited before] puts Parthalis in Burdwan = Purbasthali. You might look into that. Kathie
Guest guest
there is an ASIKA IN ORISSA. HEARTLAND OF VEDIC VAISNAVAS -C.4TH through to 6th A.D - BRAHMINS OF ALL VEDAS were there. Asmaka means 'uneven country'. Bhaskar-acharya c.6th A.D., says asmaka was the native land of Arya Bhatta, c.4th A.D. Both were siddhantims. Kalinga on dt. c.650 A.D. was a strongly siddhantic state. Lot much gap. Bihar has a tradition that he was from such territory. Some say he was born in Kerala....The Ganga valley was strongly siddhantic. No doubt. But not asmaka, geomorphologically. If taken technically, asmaka is same as Asama ! Yet (Assam ?)... Assam is flat land. i have to check up the geomorphology of Asika (Or). Also maps may be help help. Go to Orissa, then Asika ? Thus, it may not be possible to locate their capital in Bengal. Burdwan is more connected with the tribe of Sumhas, which tribe was mentioned in various epics and Raghuvamsa.
