Guest guest
Hello all, In a recent discussion thread in Google Groups, a claim was made of a Gond kingdom in ancient times. This claim was made in the context of a larger claim that the it was the indigenous people (Gonds?) of Orissa that perished in large numbers in the Kalinga war of Ashoka. Since I am new to this group, I don't know whether this has been discussed here before. Any useful pointers to more information on the above claim (esp. the one about an ancient Gond kingdom) would be appreciated. Thanks much Dinesh
Guest guest
Hi, In a recent discussion thread in Google Groups, a claim was made of a Gond kingdom in ancient times. This claim was made in the context of a larger claim that the it was the indigenous people (Gonds?) of Orissa that perished in large numbers in the Kalinga war of Ashoka.I have seen this discussion but it seems very peripheral. .However, I have posted the following message there: " Right now, I am posting continuously on Priyadarsi ( there is strong evidence to prove that he is not Asokavardhana Maurya) and Kalinga in my group /join Let me make some points here for the ready reference: 1. Kalinga is a buddhist kingdom. It is certainly ruled by kings though their names are not usually made popular. It was commercially active for ages. It was lying on the important trade routes, both land and sea. Especially, in those days, it was Kalinga which was connecting the south and North. 2. Priyadarsi is an ambitious king who wanted to control these trade routes and hence, the Kalinga conquest 3. Taranatha notes that he did not stop his conquests with Kalinga but went ahead to conquer the entire 'Jambudwipa " (the money earned by Kalinga naval trade along with the free labour of Kalingas on his gold mines in south india must have supplied him the financial support required for such conquests) Hence, the entire remorse story might be a fast one to pull wool over the people, since Priyadarsi has seen and was impresed how Buddhism has created a kingdom of peaceful and highly obedient community from Kalingas. At least initially, Buddhism (and Dharma) was more a tool of royal control. In fact, towards this end, he has brought the entire Buddhist Church under Royal control. Proof of his false remorse is two fold : His famous edict announcing his remorse over the Kalinga conquest was not found in Kalinga at all, though there are other inscriptions. Obviously, Bush can not talk of human rights in Afganistan or Iraq. They would not believe him there. Secondly, he did not free either the captives (said to be in lakhs) or the Kalinga kingdom itself from slavery. Now coming to Gonds getting massacred in Kalinga war , the historical evidence does not make any such suggestion and if there is one, you may please write to me Kishorepatnai... Priyadarsi talks of Girijans in a different context. Hope it helps, " Since I am new to this group, I don't know whether this has been discussed here before. Any useful pointers to more information on the above claim (esp. the one about an ancient Gond kingdom) would be appreciated. Thanks much DineshNo, this was not discussed here before since no such suggestion was thrown earlier by historical evidence we have of Priayadarsi and Kalinga war. Guest guest
Dear Mr.Kishore Patnaik, My ancestors originated from BHUVANESWARAM (i.e.) modern Bhubaneswar. My family name and initial are BHVANESWARAM.I belong to the dynasty of Bhuvaneswaram.I am a Brahmin born in an ancient Royal family of Kalinga. The claim that the Gondas were the only natives of Kalinga is untrue.I am not a Gonda but my native place is Kalinga. As I told you in VFA, I repeat Ashokavardhana Maurya after the war of Kalinga never repented for it.He never changed into a Buddhist. The Ashoka of Kashmir converted into a Buddhist and prached Buddhism world over who is totally different from Ashoka Vardana Maurya. Vishnu Purana, Book IV, Chapter XVIII describes the origin of the name Kalinga as follows : Anu, the fourth son of Yayati, had 3 sons, Sabhanara, Chakshusha and Paramekshu. The son of the first was Kalanara; his son was Srinjaya: his son was Puranjaya; his son was Janamejaya; his son was Mahamani; his son was Mahamanas, who had 2 sons, Usinara and Titikshu,........, Titikshu has 1 son Ushadratha; his son was Hema; his son was Sutapas Bali, who had 5 sons Anga, Banga, Kalinga, Suhma, and Pundra; and their descendants, aqnd the 5 coun tries they inhabited, were known by the same names Thus, Kalinga got its name from Kalinga , the son of Bali. Guest guest
Okay, I'll top post since the discussion thread is already quite long. Thanks for the fascinating infomation and linkage back to the Vishnu purana. There is Horace Wilson's English translation (from 1840) of the book at the following URL http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/vp/index.htm#contents If you are looking for the complete Devanagari-only Sanskrit text, you can find it at http://is1.mum.edu/vedicreserve/ The above link is courtesy of the Maharishi University of Management. I am grateful to Venkatakrishnan for the information on the puranic geneology of the Kalinga. But my original question is only partially answered. Are there any references to show that the Kalinga did not displace an existing Gond kingdom? Such a claim was recently made in the Indian newsgroup in Google. While I have a hard time believing the claim, any concrete reference will be useful in refuting the argument. I am a Brahmin born in an ancient Royal family of Kalinga. Vishnu Purana, Book IV, Chapter XVIII describes the origin of the name > > Kalinga as follows : > > Anu, the fourth son of Yayati, had 3 sons, Sabhanara, Chakshusha and Paramekshu. The son of the first was Kalanara; his son was Srinjaya: his son was Puranjaya; his son was Janamejaya; his son was Mahamani; his son was Mahamanas, who had 2 sons, Usinara and Titikshu,... ....., > > Titikshu has 1 son Ushadratha; his son was Hema; his son was Sutapas Bali, who had 5 sons Anga, Banga, Kalinga, Suhma, and Pundra; and their descendants, aqnd the 5 coun tries they inhabited, were known by the same names > > Thus, Kalinga got its name from Kalinga , the son of Bali. > > B.C.VENKATAKRISHNAN . > > > > kishore patnaik <kishorepatnaik09@ gmail.com> > Re: Ancient Gond Kingdom > > Sunday, July 6, 2008, 9:27 AM Hi, > > > > In a recent discussion thread in Google Groups, a claim was made of > a Gond kingdom in ancient times.
