1. Is grantha a Tamil script ?- ------------------NO !!!!----------------------------- Why ? Grantha was specifically created to write Sanskrit words. Grantha is NEVER used to write Tamil words now. ( Once,

there was a period when Sanskrit and Tamil both were written in Grantha, but that was abandoned)2. Who learns grantha now in Tamilnadu ? Only the temple priests called Sivachariars (or kurukkal) and Pattars ( Vaishnava Pattachariars) learn in Grantha to study

the saiva and Vaishnava Agamas respectively.3. Apart from Agama students , who else learns grantha in Tamilnadu ? The vedic schools in Tamilnadu ( Veda Patashalas) run by various mutts teach Vedas in Grantha only !

The third point will come as a surprise to many here who continue to maintain that Grantha are mainly for Agamic writing. For centuries , Vedic books were written and taught in Grantha only (and not Devanagari). The additional point of inference is that Agamas were also brahmanic documents. The brahmins cleverly inducted Puranic characters and concepts into Agamas and gave it to the unsuspecting Southerners with the usual " this is the unwritten code of Shiva. Whenever people digress it, the King will suffer " . The king saw to it that he never suffered.

The part 1 of this topic will explain how the other scripts of South India viz Kannada , Malayalam and Telugu evolved out of Grantha.V
