Guest guest
Comrades, Once I read that the Buddhist Kushanas persecuted Brahmins in Kashi. After that I tried to verify this but so far without success. Does anyone know more about this? Thanks, KE
Guest guest
At its peak, Kushana Empire spread up to east of Mathura. Mathura was their capital and so was Peshawar for the northwestern regions. I did not come across any record that suggests that Kushanas reached up to Kashi. Secondly, many Kushana rulers were Vaishnavas. The statue of the Sun at Kabul Museum and many other statues of Sun elsewhere are from Kushana period. Ganesha with two arms also is from that time. If there were individual cases of persecution, perhaps we cannot generalize that these had links to the Kushana rulers. If there is a concrete proof to the contrary, please let me know. Guest guest
It is well accepted that the second capital of Kushans was Madhura. It is also widely agreed that Kanishka's empire was extended upto Benares, though Gupta empire by R K Mookerji mentions that it might have been extended upto Magadha. The Kshatrap of Kanishka at this time was Vanashpara, who has ruled from Kashi. He seemed to have marched upto Magadha and possibly, could not extend his kingdom since it was being ruled by the powerful Lichchavis at that time. Another story mentions that Kanishka ran over Kashi and he was stopped only by Aswagosha, who has offered him the begging bowl of Buddha, in return for peace. Kanishka accepted the offer. Guest guest
The religion of Kushanas is matter of debate. Please check Rabatak inscription, The major part of the inscription concerns the foundation of a temple, perhaps at Rabatak itself, which seems to have been an extensive site. Lines 9 and 10 name the divinities who are to be worshipped in the temple. you will find to several gods and goddesses of different sects and religions eg Umma, Nana, Aurmuzd, the gracious one, Sroshard, Narasa, Mihr, Maaseno and Bizago. The major cities under Kushanas (i.e. kanishka) those are mentioned are Kausambi, Saketa, Pataliputra, as far as the (city of) Sri-Campa. , " kishore patnaik " <kishorepatnaik09 wrote: > > It is well accepted that the second capital of Kushans was Madhura. Guest guest
No inscription is found at Banaras but two bramhi inscriptions of Kushan period are known from Sarnath.located at 10 Kms from Varanasi where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon. , " kishore patnaik " <kishorepatnaik09 wrote: > > It is well accepted that the second capital of Kushans was Madhura. Guest guest
> > The religion of Kushanas is matter of debate. The religion of Kanishka is Buddhism. He threatened to over run Kashi, as per some authorities. In any case, it is not a new thing that the ancient people used to refer to many Gods and Goddesses, ostensibly belonging to different and far removed cultures. That does not make their religion unknown. Mitanni is a good example in this regard. I invite debate on this issue. Kishore patnaik
