On accent there are so many rules and exceptions to rules . It's difficult to

express them in a few lines. For details one may refer directly to (1) pANini's

aSTAdhyAyii together with their commentaries, (2) svara-siddhAnta-candrikA (3)

svara-miimAMsA of Pt yudhiSThir miimAMsak.

In page 225 of Whitney he states the general rules for accent in

verbs. For example he states that the verb is not accentuated, except

at the beginning of a sentence or pAda. What is the source of this

rule? Are there exceptions to this? Whitney makes it sound as if there

are exceptions.

Thanks!

I would recommend the svaraprakriyA prakaraNa from " Siddhanta-kaumudi " .

This is also available in English translation/commentary by S. C. Vasu

(2 vols. MLBD)

In that case, you may want to start with the overview in

McDonnel's Vedic Grammar for Students, Appendix 3. The rule of thumb is

that the verb is accented in dependent clauses, usually in the first

of parallel clauses, and when emphasized (by the use of particles

etc).

aSTAdhyAyI section for accentuation of verbs is 6.1.28 to 69.
