Sanskrit, doubtlessly the most precious legacy of ancient Indian civilization

is, apart from the medium of a great literature, a virtual treasure house of

knowledge related to a variety of disciplines like medicine, philosophy,

architecture, jurisprudence, linguistics, lexicography, environmental science,

biodiversity, and polity, to cite a few. What is in store for Sanskrit in the

present century? Belying the predictions of prophets of doom, this ancient

language has stayed with us all these centuries and its influence on the Indian

psyche is not decreasing. The present century is hailed as the era of a

knowledge based global society where traditional value systems and modes of

thinking are bound to undergo drastic changes. It has, therefore, become

imperative for serious students of Sanskrit to envision the future of Sanskrit

and the knowledge enshrined in it.

It is against this background that a proposal to conduct a three-day

national seminar on Sanskrit in the 21st century has been mooted by the Sahitya

Akademi. The seminar will be heldon29,30, and 31 of May, 2007. The Seminar will

be inaugurated by Professor Vachaspati Upadhyaya, Vice Chancellor, LBS

University, New Delhi. Professor Sukumar Azhicode, will deliver the keynote

address. Professor Prahlada Char will deliver the valedictory address. The venue

of the seminar will be Calicut University, located near the historic city of

Calicut, which was a glorious seat of Sanskrit learning during the days of the

Zamorins. About 30 distinguished scholars from the different parts of the

country will present papers on a variety of topics. The seminar will take stock

of the situation of Sanskrit in the contemporary world and be a venue of the

articulations of the views of scholars who could share their perceptions about

the scope and range of Sanskrit in the present century,

the focal points being sanskritistic research in interdisciplinary lines and

popularization of Sanskrit.
