Guest guest
Dear Members of the List, It is believed that the great Advaita Philosopher-Saint Shankaracharya went to Kaladi when his aged mother died and lit her funeral pyre and performed the final rites all alone in spite of the strong resistance from the Nambudari Brahmins. Is this just a traditional belief or there are any old records or writings narrating the incident? The Hindu Samnyasins are supposed to cut off their family ties and eschew all filial feelings for their kith and kin. In the case of Shankaracharya, is it an exceptional case as he was the only son of his mother and moreover had promised her before taking up Samnyasa or any Hindu Samnyasin being the only son of his mother is allowed to do so quoting Shankaracharya?
