the magha krishna chaturdasi tithi which is celebrated as mahashivaratri starts

in india on friday the 12th february from the wee hours of 0300 and lasts till

next day early morning of 0500 hours. since usa timing is approximately 12

hours after india, you are advised to follow mahashivaratri on 12th friday in

usa.

Namah Shivaya

Namaste Panditji,

3am Friday in India would be 4:30 pm (Eastern time)on thursday in USA. So does

it mean the real MahaShivaratri night would be Thursday night here and the

person should fast on thursday.

regards,

Shailendra

here we follow the tithi for celebration when it is in the morning when the sun

rises. in some geographies of india, they follow the night of the tithi for

fasting. few people in india are observing mahashivaratri on 13th also for

reasons known to themselves.

however, considering all angles, it is prudent for you in usa to follow

mahashivaratri on friday the 12th itself and not on thursday.
