Namaste,

Can any member please help clarify if there are any restrictions on

offering neivedam to Shiva lingam pooja at home?

I was told by a priest that we must offer only cooked white rice.

Can I offer fruits instead?

Thank you.

Warmest Regards,

Narayanan

Dear Narayanan,

Lord Shiva is the most easily pleased. He accepts everything from His devotees. Only thing required from the offering is love and devotion. These are some of the neivedhyams He accepted..!!

1. The foot mark of Kannappa when he placed it on the Shiv Linga.

2. The water he took on his mouth as abhisheka

3. The meat he bought, after carefully selecting them by tasting it himself.

4. The pooja done by the Snake, Spider and Elephant in SriKalaHasti

5. Stones, offered by a Nayanar when he did not find flowers to offer.

So there is only one requirement to Lord Shiva pooja. It is love and devotion. He is such a benevolent and merciful lord. After all, we do these poojas to purify ourselves, isn't it?

Fruits can be offered. Cooked rice or anything offered with love is sufficient enough.

There is an interesting story in the Mahabharata. Arjuna visits the Shiva Loka where he finds the Bootha Ganas carrying heavy loads of flowers in a big line. He thought to himself 'great is this bhakti, who offered so much of flowers to the lord, and who is he?'

He asked one of the Ganas and he was astounded by their reply. It was his dear brother Bheemasena, they replied.

He wondered 'Bheema?!! The one who eats all the time and shouts 'war, war, war'...I have never seen him doing any sort of such pooja?!!

The Ganas replied 'He offers these flowers to the Lord through his mind itself, in the middle of all his activities and thats why you see so much of flowers piled up. Please forgive us, we don't have time to talk to you as there are many more piles that needs to be taken..!

Hope it clarifies.

Yes u can offer fruit but not Orange or a fruit of its family.Kindly don't eat any thing which is touched with Shiv Linga that will be very very harmfull.I had parciticaly suffered because of that, a coconut can also be offered by breaking near Linga its water can be poured on.

One can offer uncooked whole rice all are accepted by Shiva.

Any thing offered with pure heart is accepted by Shiva he is Bholynath therefore pure heartness is must.

Dear Shree Assaram,

May I request you to clarify on 'don't eat anything which is touched with Shiva Linga " ?

I do the abhishekam with milk and at the end, I take that as a prasad. Shouldn't it be done?

Namah Shivaya

I have seen on MahaShivaratri day that the priest in charge of the ShivLinga was

allowing people to take a drop of the water falling out of the ShivLinga as

prasad.

I have also heard that water flowing out of the ShivLinga is like heavy

water(D2O), which is a by product in a nuclear reactor and should not be

consumed.

I would also like to hear authentic source/quotes on this topic.

Dear Shivbhakths,

What is more important is bhakti and sincereity, if these two are there the divine will correct our mistakes and guide us in the right path in our spiritual practices, the main purpose of any spiritual practice is to clean our heart and control our five senses and tread on the path of truth and love and maintain focus on the divine aspect of the deity (not just the physical form), if the focus shifts from that and moves onto logistics/procedures then there is no end to it because it is maya.

Water put in divine presence or dripping from shiv linga gets purified and charged with divine energy, it is holy water, it will heal people, such water will not become bad or unconsumable.

Om Namah Shivaaya,

Divakar.

Hii friendss

There is no restrictions on Neivedam. We can offer fruits, milk, sweets and any form of eatable items. The condition is that we should first offer to the God and take it as a prasadham. We never have to taste before such offerings. Also it should be noted that ,it shouldbe in a eatable condition while offer to the god.

I do the abhishekam with milk and at the end, I take that as a prasad. Shouldn't it be done?

I am generally a silent listener in the group trying to absorb what knowledge

flows. However feel compelled to add what little I know about this

subject......

There are two types of SivaLingams that are found in this physical world.

First type is Swyambhu Lingams. These are as the name suggests 'self manifest'

into this world for the betterment of humankind. Some more prominent Swyambhu

Lingams are Amarnath, PashupatiNath, Kasi etc. There are further Lingams that

belong to this category e.g. naturally made Narmada SivaLingams. Any offerings

made to any one of these is OK for consumption by anyone either in the form of

Prasadam to eat or in the form of Leaves flowers to keep in your Puja Altar at

home.

Second kind is manmade. Offerings made to these SivaLingams are the ones that

are prescribed not to be fit for general population consumption. I believe that

there are a few groups of people that are expressly allowed to consume offerings

made to these Lingams. However don't remember which groups but certainly not

the general population.

Hopefully someone else can pick this thread and elaborate.........

regards

Hari Oum!

I remeber word " Shiv Nirmalya " it means given to shiv and thats it you do not

want it....

If this makes sense then its you who is doing that or not? You want to give up

or not?

Touching Shiv ling with ourself....you may remeber movie " Satyam Shivam

Sundaram "

Our trast and shradhha generates energy in temple or Shivlinga...may we do not

want to get it dissipated so priest want allow anybody to touch him.....

I was always thinking that how can I recover this 500 gallons of milk, which is

pour on linga by doing filtering and plumbings...

I belive not to waste that much....any guidance so I can stop thinking of saving

milk?

Dear Shiv Bhaktas,

I think there are two things -

1) If you are offering shiva pooja / rudrabhishek at home youself, you can definitely take as a prasad whatever you offered to lord shiva. Nowhere it is written that you can not eat it.The Dakshina, you offered during shiv pooja should be given to a pandit.

2) If you are offering shiva pooja / rudrabhishek at your home / any temple via Brahmin, just mind that you are not supposed to take any offered thing from shiva linga. you can have the prasad offered to shiv linga but given by the bhahmin only who offered the pooja.

On 12th feb, Mahashivrathri is coming and there is maha kumbha at hardwar. The first royal bath of this kumbha is on 12/2/10, I will be there.......... any one who needs any info can contact me.

Har har mahadev....

Dear Sir,

There are two important principles. One is Sivan Soththu Kula Nasam" i.e. any thing that belongs to Lord Siva lif you take it for your pesrsonal use that will destroy one's esntire progeny. But the

Abhishekla Threertham, Milk, Panchamritam, Veeboothi or Bhasma alll these things can be taken as Prasalda, just a drop ;of it , with devotion and revserances lis allowed as per sastras. lIt should not be for your taste, or to quench your thirst. The Abhilsheka Teertha purifies your body and mind when taken with Bhakti. If taken more quantity it has to undergo degesstive process of the body and mix with urine wahich is not advicable. Then it looses it's medicinal qualitly. This will applly to all kindes of Siva forms Swayambu, Arsha etc or eve to the Bana Linga Worshiped by individuals in their houses. This will apply evesn iln the worship of other deities. But verymuch observed styrictly in Siva worship. That is why the distribution ;of prasada in Siva Temple is comparitively less than Other Temples. Even the Veebhuoothi recelved in Siva Sannadi should be appplied to ones body immediately and not to be brought

home. This is Agama Sastra.

I believe that there are a few groups of people that are expressly allowed to consume

offerings made to these Lingams. However don't remember which groups but certainly not the general population.Hopefully someone else can pick this thread and elaborate... ......regardsAnand om_namah_shivaya_ group@ s.com, Assaram Alamchandani <aac6993 > wrote:>> I too agree with you.> Assaram> > --- On Thu, 1/28/10, mg garga <mggarga > wrote:> > > mg garga <mggarga >> Re: [om_namah_shivaya_ group] Re: Shiva Pooja : Restrictions on Neivedam?> om_namah_shivaya_ group@ s.com> Date:
