As a boy I learned shuklayajurveda from my guruji whose name was Jagannath Shastriji (in America of all places) in the traditional manner. Although due to the circumstances I didn't learn the whole thing, just enough for my nitya karmas and doing pujas, kathas etc., what I did learn was solid. Even now 20+ years later, I can perfectly recall all the rks without looking at a book. This is what Ramesh earlier refered to as smarana and this is what I mean by Vedic studies.----------------Hinduism's past downfall was directly attributed to its discrimination of lower castes and rituals, which greatly contributed to the rise of Buddhism and Jainism. Sankaracharya, Ramanujacharya, Alvars and Nayanars brought down these 'External Religions' by arguments, debate.... Rituals have a place but do not and should not form the centerpiece of Hinduism. Vivekananda was a chosen disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. That is good enough for me to name him as the greatest Hindu of modern times. it takes a Sage to see a Sage. Committing Brahmanas to rote and not knowing its essence is what exactly Vivekanada condemns. Full and prescribed observation of daily rituals leave no time for any thing else in modern times. if we were ritualists, we should not have come to America in the pursuit of Faustian Knowledge and moola.
