Hari OM.A few months back when I gave the news of death of one our common friends to another friend of mine, I could observe the feeling of fear psychosis on my friend`s face. The news had ,perhaps, produced a wave of shock in my friend`s mind. Each one of us,perhaps, would also react in the same fashion in identical circumstances. News of death does not produce the same level of shock, sorrow, grief and allied feelings to us unless the deceased is our dearest blood relative or our closest friend. If the news of death pertains to someone

whom we have never met in life at all, we are least perturbed. The degree of our sorrow or grief decreases with the distance(not necessarily geographical) we have kept with the people before their death. For example, if one`s worst enemy or foe or a person whom one hates dies , outwardly one may pose to be sorrowful. But in his heart of hearts he will not mourn over the death of such person. Death is often designated as "Sad Demise" in the Obituary columns of newspapers. Why is it that birth of a child produces happiness while death of even a child produces sorrow? Pl. think.

There are different perceptions about death per se. While some consider it as a sort of homecoming or reunion with God, others think that on death one gets permanently merged with God. Some think death breaks all the bondages and makes one permanently released. There are any number of such incorrect beliefs and misunderstandings. This humble self regrets he is unable to swallow these theories. As to who is eligible to merge with God and as to who is eligible for immortality etc. etc. has already been covered in the earlier postings.

To us, jivas, death is the only certainty. Hardly anybody can accept death cheerfully and boldly. In fact death at the level of the Gross Body is certain even for realized souls. Lord Krishna says in the Gita that death is like discarding of old clothes and wearing new clothes. As already stated in one of the earlier postings, when a jiva dies, only his/her gross body is left behind as corpse and the body is cremated as per relevant practice. The subtle body of the erstwhile living entity has to undergo transmigration, according to Hindiusm and other religions which originated in Bharat(India).
