Hari OMBhagawan Ramanamaharishi says that the marks of a (sadguru) real Master is steady abidance in the Self, looking at all with an equal eye, unshakeable courage at all times, in all places and circumstances etc. And the marks of an earnest disciple or

seeker

(sadsishya) are an intense longing for the removal of sorrow and attainment of joy and intense aversion for all kinds of mundane pleasure. Although in absolute truth, the state of the Guru is that of oneself, it is very hard for the Self which has become the individual soul (

jiva) through ignorance to realize its true state or nature without the grace of the Guru, which is beyond words or thoughts. Just as the elephant wakes up on seeing a lion in its dream, so too the disciple wakes up from the sleep of ignorance into the wakefulness of true knowledge through the Guru`s benevolent look of grace. To a few mature persons the Lord shines as light of knowledge and imparts awareness of the truth even in the abscence of a Guru. That is only by way of exception.

The seeker or disciple is in the stage of a conditioned soul and is finding himself in the darkest region of ignorance and is therefore entangled in the material existence of sense gratification. If one is fortunate enough to get the association of a spiritual Master like Kapila Muni or His representative, then by his grace one can be delivered from the mire of ignorance. The spiritual Master is therefore worshipped as one who delivers the disciple from the mire of ignorance with the light of the torch of knowledge. Such a Spiritual Master is called a Paragam, one who can take the seeker to the other side. This side is conditioned life; the other side is the life of freedom. The spiritual Master takes the disciple to the other side by opening his eyes with knowledge. By the instruction of the spiritual Master, the darkness of ignorance is removed, and thus the seeker is enebled to go to the side of freedom. If after many births, one is able to find a bona fide spiritual Master and surrenders to such a bonafide Master, one can be taken to the side of Light.
