Guest guest
Dear Friends, Hari OM. When any action is undertaken with ego and egocentric desires denoted by the "I' and "I Want" attitudes in predominance, that action leaves its impressions as a Vasana in us. The ego is thus the final manifestation of of the subtle powerful vasanas in each personality. Ego and ego-centric desires to-gether constitute Vishaya Asakti (attachment to objects). The essence of Ego lies in the vanity of the agency and enjoyership. The attitude of doership( I do attitude) and enjoyership(I enjoy attitude) will maintain themselves in our bosom. Identification with the mind gives rise to the sense of enjoyership, while identification with the intellect to a sense of doership. These two viz., enjoyership and doership put together constitute the Ego which is nothing but the Perceiver-Feeler-Thinker entity, the Individuality, as Swamy Chinmayananda used to say. According to Vedanta, the Self getting reflected in the intellect, body and the senses is is the ego, which is the victim of the world of objects, feelings and ideas. Ego rises when the Supreme Self is not recognised and this deep-seated ignorance in man veils his Divine nature for himself. The egocentric idea that man is conditioned by his own body, mind and intellect is the true seed of delusory attachments. By rediscovering ourselves that we are something higher than our own ego, we can put an end to all the sorrows that have come to us through our false identification. I (not my ego here) have been questioning myself as to what constitutes ego for sometime in the past. The I-personality in each one of us is nothing but the memories of certain facts of life lived in the past, such as I am the son of so and so, educated, lived, loved, hated, taught etc. etc. In short I am the sum total of all the retained memories of all the vivid experiences I have had in the past. The I-concept includes also my hopes for future. The ego in me has no existence in the present moment. It thrives in the past and in the unknown future. If only we live vitally and dynamically in the present and not in the past or unknown future, our ego will get extinguished.
