Dear Shabnamji,

I am much delighted to receive your quory.7th of chaitra(solar) is 20th of March which is also solar date. The full moon in March is the actual spring equinox (lunar).six days before is the Ramnavami as it should be.But our old system is to celebrate chaitra purnima as spring equinox and it falls in April.but the spring equinox does not fall in april, so it is the wrong spring equinox. So it is necessary to celebrate ramnavami one month before.

thank you,

Sincerely yours,

Hari Malla

Dear Hari Malla Sir,

I am taking the liberty to write to you off list because what you have written is of great interest to me & I can see from the lack of response on the group site, that not many other members resonate with this subject anyway, so I hope you don't mind me writing.

Since you have written about the festivals being out of sequence, I am certain that you must have put some thought to it & hopefully have some ideas to share.

Like you I too believe that we are celebrating festivals at the wrong time but I don't know enough about the calculations of panchagams to

figure it out all by myself.

For e.g. The spring Equinox is on the 20th of March. This is also the Navami tithi but the naksahtra is Purva Ashad instead of Punarvasu which is supposed to be the Nakshatra of Ramji`s birth.

& just suppose 20th march is Ram Navmi, then Hanumanjayanthi would be 26th March on Chaitra Shukla Amavasya instead of Purnima & Akshay Teej would be Krishna paksh 12th of April instead of 27th April which is Shukla paksh.

& Vijaya Dashmi would be on 21 June which is not a Dashmi at all but Amavasya.

The problem is that we are now having the festivals on the Krishna Paksh instead of Shukla paksh & the Nakshatras are going a bit haywire.

I am just a self teaching ignoramus but I have a really great interest in learning about such things. If you have thoughts, ideas, theories, alternative festival dates & don't mind sharing, then this will be greatfully received.

I hope that you will write.

Harii Om !

Shabnam

Re: RE: Shiva Sahasranamam?

Dear Mr.Vyas,

What you say is quite right.I am not sure if you would be interested in what I will be writing to you here.My point is what you have said is right. The purpose of the navaratra are to lead us to mental stabillity and happiness by celebrating those navaratra. The four navaratras are so placed that they fall on the two equinoxes and the two solstices. These four points help us to stop time.Once time is stopped, we can go beyond time to Atma or Brahmah. These are the purpose of the navaratras. The birth of Ram is Ram navami, the moon is supposead to be at the winter soltices at that time.At Vijaya dasami the moon is supposed at the summer solstice. Also the earth is at the spring equinox at Ram navami and at the autumn equinox at Vijaya dasami. Thus our festivals are well arranged.

But you know our festivals are out of sequence now due to precession of the equinoxes. This is known as ayan-chalan or ayanamsa in jyotish. We have to shift our fstivals one month backwards to bring them into harmony with the seasons.Let us all work for that purpose so that the festivals are celebrated at correct times and we get the religious fruits of our celebrataions.

thanks.

Hari Malla
