A tribute to Smt M S Subbulakshmi

The Queen of Bhakti Music

For decades, M.S. and her husband were, like many in Madras, devout followers of the Paramacharya of Kanchi. One fine day, and I have this on good authority, Paramacharya asked M.S. to go Puttaparthi. M.S. was apparently puzzled by this command and wanted to know why she should go to Puttaparthi when she already had a Guru. The Paramacharya simply said: “Go and you will find the reason.â€

Incidentally, it is interesting that Ramana Maharishi also once sent some of his disciples to Puttaparthi in this same way. So, M.S. came and she instantly knew why she had been asked to come here. Thereafter she was a regular visitor, and sang many times in the Divine presence. Swami even visited her home in Chennai on many occasions.

Swami invariably showed much love to M.S. One year during Ladies Day, Swami asked her to speak. She said, “Swami I do not know how to speak. I could sing, but now, even that I am not able to do. How can I speak Swami?â€

But Swami would not take no for an answer. He went down to where she was sitting, and helped her to walk up a few steps to the porch in Sai Kulwant Hall and took her to the podium.

M.S. then said, “Swami, as I just said, I do not know how to make speeches. But if they ask me are you father, I will say you certainly are father. If they ask me are you mother, I will assert that you are indeed mother.†And in this manner she spoke just a few sentences, straight from the Heart.

That evening, when Swami was going round and giving Darshan in Poornachandra Hall before a cultural program, he told a group of ladies, “Today, so many people made speeches, but the speech of M.S. alone stood out. It came from the heart; all the others were artificial!â€

Warden Narasimha Murthy was busy preparing the next volume of Sathyam, Sivam, Sundaram, meant to be released the following year. In this connection, he has been talking to many old-timers, and one of them was M.S. Apparently, at the end of the conversation, Narasimha Murthy asked, “Do you have any special prayer for Bhagavan?â€

M.S. smiled and replied, “Where is the question of prayer? Before we even start to pray, Swami is giving all that we want and even more!â€

PS: When the mind of man is unattached to the ups and downs of life, but is able to maintain equanimity under all circumstances, good physical health will be assured. Illness is caused more by malnutrition of the mind than of the body. Doctors speak of vitamin deficiency; I will call it the deficiency of "Vitamin G", and I will recommend the repetition of the Name of God, contemplation of the Glory and Grace of God. That is the "Vitamin G" medicine. Medicine for ill-health is one third of the treatment. Regulated life and good habits are two-thirds.

Dear Mr.Sastry

I happen to see ur previous mails and all were interesting. But this mail of  Kanchi Paramacharya asking  MS to go to puttapurthi is very new concept and story. Please note that Ramana Maharishi never ever told anyone to visit any Mahans or Gnanis and too not to Puttapurthi since he himself told everyone that this body is not his .

So  Please send real information instead of sending these mails and spoiling the names of  Maha purushas. Note all can write anything in there website so please get the real picture and update it.

Thank u

You are right, there is a tendency to join names and create legends. However,

this is a practice from time immemorial and I think the message is more

important. If we were to become factual, I have a feeling that most of the

Puranas would have to be discarded. Bhava and Bhakti are more important than

'facts', in my humble opinion.

All Gnanis are the same. The guru should be treated as the father and the mother

- ie. with equal love, respect and complete trust.

My feeling is that, we should not deify (convert to God) anyone. Since God is

the indweller, we are as much God as any one else. The problem with idolizing a

person is that, we then say that " only a Mahaan like xyz can achieve this. I am

an ordinary mortal, let me live my life the way I am comfortable. " This is

patently not true. There are no excuses on the path to Saadhana. When we put

someone on a pedestal, it gives us an excuse for our behaviour. Dr. Sastry

already posted Swamy Vivekanand's speech on " DEVELOP SELF-CONFIDENCE TO GAIN

SUCCESS IN LIFE " . We need to realize that we are no different from the Mahaans -

its only a matter of time and effort that seperates us. The Mahaans were/are an

EXAMPLE, not an impossible ideal.

As always this is an excellent forum for ShivBhakts, and a great source for

information. But let us remember that email communication is a tricky thing.

When we say something with a smile to a person in front of us, there is no

question of misinterpreting the intent. But, emails don't have that emotional

connection. We need to be extra careful about the wording of replies. We must

make sure that our responses are no different from if you were addressing our

parents or child. Remember, we are all Bhaktas, this is a forum to foster Bhakti

and love. Emails should be worded in a way to simulate discussion rather than

Arguementation.

Love always

Satish

Dear Narayanan avl,

Bhakti is eternal.

Thank you for your kind message.

The word Sorry came from my heart. Your reaction makes everyone to realize the wisdom of true humanity.

Every word and each letter of Bhagavad-Gita are the tutors to those who follow Sanatana Dharma. It clearly says that lack of discrimination is devoid of faith. Let us recollect the teachings from Jnana Yoga:

Sraddhaavaan labhatE jnaanam tatparaha samyatEndriyaha,

Jnaanam labdhvaa paraam Saanti macirENaathigacchati.

ajnaScaa SraddadhaanaSca samSayaatmaa vinaSyati,

naayam lOkOsti na parO na sukham samSayaatmanaha.

He who has mastered his senses, is exclusively devoted to his practice and is full of faith, attains knowledge, having had the revelation of Truth, he immediately attains supreme peace in the form of God-realisation. He who lacks discrimination, is devoid of faith, and is at the same time possessed by doubt, is lost to the spiritual path. For the doubting soul there is neither this world nor the world beyond, nor even happiness.

I am a personal disciple of Holy Periyavaa and I am not supposed to reveal our conversations as others do.

Having inspired by the divine preaching of Bhagavan Sathya Sai Baba, I am sending the messages which will educate the devotees to cultivate Bhakti, devotion and also put into right way of life.

Further I am not a scholar and a student during my life time.

The public always consider the Doctor as God under the faith “vaidyO naaraayanO harihiâ€

You know! I have medical practice of forty years; but still I do not possess one millionth medical knowledge! The only full-fledged doctor is GOD. Is it possible for the God to give one lack year of age to me? If in the affirmative HE should also give some more good persons like you for feeding me and then also I will be the same doctor. That is the reason, I never fail to pray God, whenever I treat a patient and with the result, there were no casualties.

The education has no boundaries and in persuasion, everyone is prone to commit mistakes at one stage. Committing is common and accepting is furtherance of education.

I shall be glad to have acquaintance with you. My mail ID is drbgysastry.

Kindly reply with full details.

With love and regards,

Sastry

Dear Mr.Sastry

I happen to see ur previous mails and all were interesting. But this mail of Kanchi Paramacharya asking MS to go to puttapurthi is very new concept and story. Please note that Ramana Maharishi never ever told anyone to visit any Mahans or Gnanis and too not to Puttapurthi since he himself told everyone that this body is not his .

So Please send real information instead of sending these mails and spoiling the names of Maha purushas. Note all can write anything in there website so please get the real picture and update it.

Thank u

Regards

A tribute to Smt M S Subbulakshmi The Queen of Bhakti Music For decades, M.S. and her husband were, like many in Madras, devout followers of the Paramacharya of Kanchi.

Apparently, at the end of the conversation, Narasimha Murthy asked, “Do you have any special prayer for Bhagavan?†M.S. smiled and replied, “Where is the question of prayer? Before we even start to pray, Swami is giving all that we want and even more!†PS: When the mind of man is unattached to the ups and downs of life, but is able to maintain equanimity under all circumstances, good physical health will be assured.

Dear Narayanan avl, Bhakti is eternal. Let us recollect the teachings from Jnana Yoga: Sraddhaavaan labhatE jnaanam tatparaha samyatEndriyaha, Jnaanam labdhvaa paraam Saanti macirENaathigacchat i. ajnaScaa SraddadhaanaSca samSayaatmaa vinaSyati, naayam lOkOsti na parO na sukham samSayaatmanaha. The public always consider the Doctor as God under the faith “vaidyO naaraayanO harihi†You know!

My mail ID is drbgysastry@ ..com. Kindly reply with full details. With love and regards, Sastry --- On Sat, 3/7/09, R.Narayanan <narayanan.st1@ gmail.com> wrote:

Dear Sastryji

Thank you for your response. Sometimes our people misuse the names of Mahans like this.So only wanted to tell my wish about it. Your way of asking excuse makes me slightly unbalanced and new since I see many sending reply messages arguing their stand,. It shows your humbleness. I bow my head for you and your words.

Great of you Sastriji and excuse and all not atall necessary ji . Meanwhile nice meeting you by this mail conversation and lets start our friendship with this. Pls. send your gmail id or id to me .

Thank you
