SIVA RAHASYA Kanda of the Skanda Maha Purana deals with the Avatara and Lilas of Lord Skanda ( An Incarnation of Lord Siva). The Skanada Maha Purana is the best Purana composed by Sri Vyasa Bhagavan. The Puranas are eighteen in number. They are the Brahma Purana, Padma Purana, Vishnu Purana, Siva Purana, Bhagavata Purana, Bhavishya Purana, Agni Purana, Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Linga Purana, Varaha Purana, Skanda Purana, Vamana Purana, Matsya Purana, Kurma Purana, Garuda Purana and Brahmanda Purana. Of these, the Skanda Maha Purana is the biggest. 18 Puranas totalling nearly 400 000 verses and Skanda Maha Purana itself contains nearly 100 000 verses, only highly matured souls can understand the greatness of this Purana, this Purana mainly deals with Knowledge portion of the Vedas.The teachings of the Vedas and the Upanishads are

beyond the grasp of the average intellect. Sri Vyasa Bhagavan who codified the Vedas has therefore given the truths of the Vedas in a homely style in the Puranas for the easy understanding of the common man. The Puranas are like the magnifying glasses which reveal the subtle truths in a graspable manner, and they appeal easily to the sentiments of man.

 

Two Skanda Puranas are available—one divided into Khandas, and the other divided into Samhitas. The former gives only a brief account of Lord Skanda’s Avatara and the destruction of Tarakasura at His hands. The latter, however, contains a detailed account of the divine advent and the glorious deeds of Lord Skanda—the need for the Lord’s advent, His auspicious Avatara, His Bala Lilas, the commanding of the Deva army against the Asuras and their destruction, His marriage with Valli ( Iccha Shakti )and Deivayanai (Kriya Shakti ), etc. There is a work called Kanda Puranam in Tamil, composed by Saint Kachiyappa Sivachariar, in verses, based on the Samhita-divided Skanda Purana and under the orders of Lord Skanda Who also gave the first line for the work.

 

 

The advent of the Lord was for the purpose of punishing the wicked and protecting the good. The great Asura Surapadma was tyrannising the Devas. He was defeated in battle by the Lord and the Devas were released from his control. This happened on the eve of the sixth day after Dipavali, which is the day of Skanda Shashthi. This day is celebrated in a grand manner in all temples of Lord Skanda. To devotees and spiritual seekers, the period of six days of Skanda Shashthi is an occasion for observance of strict Vratas, performance of grand worships and communion with the Lord in the Self within. Glory to Lord Skanda, the bestower of Divine Wisdom.

I am unsure, about which Skanda Purana Mr. Selvakumar is referring to; However the Shiva Rahasya is a massive work, more precisely an Itihasa by its own containing around 1,00,000 verses divided into 12 Amshas (or volumes). Regarding the terms magnifying glasses puranas are generally refered as Brihat Akara of the Veda. Infact that knowledge / Dharma concealed in the Vedas are brought to light by the puranas in a way understandable to the common man, though stories, tales and other graphic expressions. It must be however noted that these are not mere fairy tales or imaginative stories. Each Purana has it conception from the supreme and thus must be regarded as sacred as the other scriptures.

Skanda Maha Purana infact is ONE and only one, The two versions that we see today are the two recesions of the same purana. While I have not had a chance to see the Souther Recessions or the Adhyaya recession (Samhitas), The Skanda Purana has more than just the Advent of Lord Skanda. Infact, were it not for Skanda Purana, it would be difficult to relate the Kshetra Puranam (Sthala Puranams) of many ancient temples including Tiruvannamalai (Arunachala Kshetram), Chidambara, Madurai, Ujjain, Kashi, Badari and so on. The Skanda Purana not only extolls Shaiva Temples but also Vaishnava Temples. The Skanda Purana is also a major souce of information on ceremonies and vrathams for many festivals, like Deepavali, Bali Pratipad, Yama Dvitiya, Ganga snanam (on parva days) etc. Apart from this Skanda Purana also has legends associated with the Himalayas and other geographic monuments of our country. So massive is this work that it forms 1/4th of the total corpus of the Mahapurana Literature as mr. selvakumar has mentioned. Interestingly many of the minor works attributed to Skanda Purana, cannot be found in copies of the Maha purana available today. For example, Halasya Mahatmyam, which is essentially the 64 leelas of Lord Sundareshwara, in the Holy city of Madhura (Madurai), is said to be one of the volumes forming a part of the Skadna Purana. This can however not be found in any of the major Khanda editions available today. I am yet to peruse the southern recession, since I have not come across any copy of the same.

I was referring to what Saint 'Thirumuruga Kirubananda Variyar' said:

"The Skanda Mahapurana (one of the 18 great Puranas) consists of 100,000 verses. They are distributed among six Samhitas of which Sankara Samhita alone has 30,000 verses. The Siva Rahasya Khanda is one of the twelve Khandas (divisions) of this Sankara Samhita. Siva Rahasya Khanda consists of 7 Khandas. There is a work called Kanda Puranam in Tamil, composed by Saint Kachiyappa Sivachariar, in verses, based on 6 out of 7 of the Siva Rahasya Khanda of the Skanda MahaPurana and under the orders of Lord Skanda Who also gave the first line for the work. "

I have not yet come across a copy of the Southern recession of the skanda Purana. For I am told that this very khanda (Shankara Samhita) contains the sthala purana of Palani. As for clarification, there is also a Shiva Rahasyam, an itihasa which itself contains 1,00,000 odd shlokas. The entirety of this work is not available. Only parts of this has been published by Tanjore Sarfojee, Sarasvati Mahal Library (Amshas 1 - 5) if I am not mistaken. The whole corpus of this work exists in Manuscript form ONLY according to credible sources.

So I assume the Shiva Rahasya you are refering to is not this. Even in such case, it is really strange that a major work and part of another un-connected major work should posses the same name. While there are some minor differences between the Northern and the Southern recessions of the Skanda Maha Purana, it would wrong to say that they are altogether different. For example, the Khanda Recession DOES contain the battle of Lord Skanda with Padmasura and his associates namely Tarakasura, Simhamukhasura, Ajamukhi, Bhanugopa et al, His birth and other associated leelas with vivid detail.
