Sir,

After visiting several Shiva Temples, I am wondering why the Lingam's

middle part(Yoni) is always facing North direction. I will be grateful

if you could explain this.

Regards,

Gopalakrishna

This is given in the Shiva Purana as per method of placing the Linga ( I don't recall the exact reference but I am sure I have read this )

The Yoni is a symbolic representation of the Cosmic womb, according to Tantra energy is starts in the North and ends in the South in accordance with the polarity of earths energy. By placing the Yoni facing North this acts as a receptacle of power. When the Linga becomes active this power can actually be felt for about 10-15 feet away by people that are sensitive.
