dear shivbhakts

om namo bhagawate rudraya

shivbhakts may kindly note that this story on negative nature of

women was narrated by the sages who heard it from the mouth of a

woman which they reckon as a cause of detachment and liberation from

women. hence women members shall not feel bad about this story as it

is meant for those willing to liberate from detachment.

following is taken from the 29th chapter titled " women's nature " from

uma samhita in shivapurana. this particular story is available in

volume 3 of the english shivapurana pages 1551 to 1554 published by

motilalbanarsidas.

============quote============

vyasa says: o sage sanatkumara, please narrate succinctly what was

mentioned by pancachuda that women are despicable.

sanatkumara says: i shall explain the nature of women as it is,

listen to it, merely hearing which results in detachment. women are

lightminded. they are at the root of all troubles. attachment

towards them shall not be pursued by wakeful persons who desire

liberation. in this respect they quote an ancient tradition, the

conversation of narada with the unchaste woman pancacuda (an

apsara). formerly while the intelligent celestial sage narada was

wandering in the worlds he saw the beautiful celestial damsel

pancacuda. naradas askes her to narrate the nature of women for the

benefit of the world.

pancacuda (the woman apsara) says:

this is the defect in women. even women of noble families, women

with husbands and women endowed with beauty do not stand within the

limits of decency.

there is none more sinning and more sinful than women.

women are at the root of all sins.

they might have husbands of good knoweldge, of ample wealth, of great

comeliness and pleasing to them. but when they get opportunities for

erring, they do not wait.

this is the evil practice of all of us women, that we resort to

sinful men casting off all shame and shyness.

women love only those persons who solicit their company, who approach

them intimately and who render them a little bit of service.

women usually do not observe the limitations of conventional

decency. if at all they stand by them with their husbands, it is

because no man makes advances to them or because they are afraid of

their husbands.

even women of noble families aspire for the life of lascivious women

who in their prime of youth adorned with lovable ornaments and

beautiful wearing garments move about frivolously.

even the women who are honoured well, loved intimately and looked

after with care become attached to hunchbacks, blind men, imbeciles

and dwarfs.

they become attached to lame and even despicable persons.

there is none in the world who cannot be approached by women with

solicitations of lust.

if women do not get men of their dalliance they begin to indulge in

abnormal sexual activity with one another. they do not stnad by

their husbands.

women become desperate when they do not get men, when they are afraid

of servants, when they are frightened of being killed or imprisoned.

because they indulge in sexual intercourse as they please they are

fickleminded, of evil deeds and emotionally incomprehensible even to

an intelligent man.

fire is not satiated with the logs of wood it consumes, the ocean is

not satiated with the rivers that flow into it. the god of death is

not satiated with the living beings he kills and women are not

satiated with the number of men they cohabit with.

there is another secret of all women that immediately on seeing a man

their vaginal passage begins to exude slimy secretions.

on seeing a man fresh and clean from his bath with his body perfumed

with sweet scents, the vaginal passage of women begins to exude like

water dripping from a leather bag.

women do not brook their husbands who may give all that they love,

who may honour and console them and who may look after them well.

women do not remain satisfied and contented so much with simple loves

and pleasures and with ornaments and money as with illicit love

purused by them with other men.

women can be kept equally balanced against all these put together

viz. god of death, yama, antaka, patala, the submarine fire, the

sharp edge of razor, poison, serpent and fire.

ever since the five elements, the world, the men and women were

created by brahma, the defect lies in women always.

sanatkumara says: o vyasa, thus the nature of women as mentioned by

a woman pancacuda has been narrated to you. what other cause of

detachment do you wish to hear.

=============unquote=========

the above story also appears in mahabharata where bhishma narrates

this for the reason of detachment from women. sage narada narrating

this story as a cause of detachment is also found in other puranas.

many sages and saints narrate this story to their disciples who are

interested in liberation and detachment from women.

members may remember a couple of mails earlier by me where pativratas

brinda and tulasi gave curses to lord vishnu which highlight that a

pativrata is so rare and so powerful that even gods are afraid of a

pativrata.

Sounds like the real author of those words plainly didn't like women. Probably he/they were either sexually repressed, spurned/hurt/rejected by a woman/women in the past, or were like so many people that furiously denounce one thing while secretly desiring/pursuing it (like several US Republicans in office as of late).

Men should just learn to control themselves better.

as you observed rightly, for a liberated and realised person all is

one.

shivbhakts may kindly note that this narration is given to men who

are interested in seeking detachment from women and become liberated.

those who are living in grihastha and seek attachment from women, may

ignore this story as a curriculum in the liberation school.

Sarvam Sivam, my dear learned friend, I saw your post on Women's nature. Cleverly said, but I wish to submit some points here. In pursuit of the truthfulness, each day our life is going, the ultimate truthfullness here we claim as siva, the cosmic energy. A person who is a truthful devotee of siva sees everything and everybody as a form of siva. Even we see linga swaroup as a form of siva and sakthi together. It is a curse that, most of our scriptures and vedanda's are only partially understood... well, broadly misunderstood, like a blinds view on elephant, each one understand things

differently. What do you mean by detachment and liberation from women, as if they are the sinful creatures cursed by lord. I wonder What or who gave you this supremacy of slaughtering the sakthi. IT IS A MISFORTUNE AND PITY THAT, EVEN A LEARNED AND SPIRITUALISTIC PERSONS LIKE YOU SEE WOMEN AS MERE SEXUAL OBJECTS. So why our father gave his better half to a woman and became Arthanariswara, Are you are saying lord siva is guilty?. And are you believe this women apsara is the whole representative of all the women?. I tell you my dear friend, siva himself is a typical form of woman, who gave birth to this world, a

mother, who tests your purity and patience is a maya, who saves you when you cry for help as a saviour. Scientifically saying no one is 100% women or 100% men. All are mixture is these two, only the percentages differ. It really hurts sir as a innocent victim of your accusations… and I wonder, why nobody came forward and clear things to our learned friend? Sivaya namaha, sumi balu.

My Dear Sumi, What you have said is excellent and correct , Without Women the man cannot gain birth in this world , The siva and shakthi are same without one other cannot servive. At present age women can do anything what men can do except delivering a child . unfortunately some shivbhakts, instead of discussing what is written

in the holy shivapurana and its subject and its subtle meaning,

decided to criticise inviduals and started judging the authors.

people with metal like selvaratnam selvakumarji discusses the

subject. similarly other members who have proper understanding of

the scritpures agree or disagree with the subject or discuss on what

is written in the scriptures.

those who cannot discuss the subject or the source scriptures, may

kindly abstain in criticisng the authors, for the same shivapurana

published in any language by any publisher is revered by these same

shivbhakts.

Panditji,

You speak of the Shiva Purana as if there was one exact version put out by a large publishing company like Random House Books in New York City, USA.

There are several "correct" versions of this Purana, as you well know and they were almost assuredly based upon earlier oral traditions and teachings.

It is very plausible to comment on the obvious intent of the authors involved as now the world has changed and much is known about the behaviour of men and especially the priest class in India, the Middle East, etc 1000 years ago, 2000 years ago, and so forth.

While I believe stringently in adhering to tradition and Guru Parampara, I intensely disdain following like sheep, traditions that were either mistranslated over time or founded after superstitious or controlling beliefs.

To deny that such things prevalently occured in India at that time and are still occuring there today is just plain denial of the Truth.

As Shivbhakts, we should be striving to obtain the Truth. If we followed what you just stated/translated/conveyed, we would condemn Maa Parvati, Beloved of Shiva Mahadev, Himself. I for one, won't go that route.

JAI MAA!

dear shivbhaktsom namo bhagawate rudrayaunfortunately some shivbhakts, instead of discussing what is written in the holy shivapurana and its subject and its subtle meaning, decided to criticise inviduals and started judging the authors.people with metal like selvaratnam selvakumarji discusses the subject. similarly other members who have proper understanding of the scritpures agree or disagree with the subject or discuss on what is written in the scriptures. those who cannot discuss the subject or the source scriptures, may kindly abstain in criticisng the authors, for the same shivapurana published in any language by any publisher is revered by these same shivbhakts.with best wishes and blessingspandit arjunwww.rudraksharemedy.com , "Mahamuni Das" <mahamuni wrote:>> Sounds like the real author of those words plainly didn't like women. And to be honest, stating what I and other members stated about what you posted, is discussing the subject and its "subtle" meaning. It is obvious that you really don't understand such things from what you are stating.

I was truly amazed when you made the statement:

"hence women members shall not feel bad about this story as it is meant for those willing to liberate from detachment".

I wonder how you would feel if you were a woman and read this? Or if it was this degrading of men, or better yet, male pundits?

According to the curse of Nandi put upon Daksha and all his followers/decedents (the pundit class), though they will have correct pronunciation, they will never properly understand the meaning, while the opposite was/is to be true of the non-pundit Shiv Bhakts. But don't judge or criticize me, take it up with the authors of the holy Shivapurana (Rudrasamhita, Chap 26., I believe) and/or Srimad Bhagavatam.

Blessings,

Surya
