SIva is " Yogiswara " THE KING OF YOGIS Symbolism in the form of Siva:Ganga in the crown -The bliss/nectar of self realization (in tantric-kaula meaning, it is the genital fluids)Third eye = omniscience or wisdom. When third eye opens , Kama(lust) is destroyed.

knotted Hair(Jada ) - renunciation(instead of golden crown)The crescent moon- Displays that what you see is not complete, there is more.(in vaishnava symbolism they use peacock feather which has both the crescent moon and the vertical eye)

white complexion- pure naturesmearing ash - symbolises that he has attained the indestructible state of the ash by burning the sensual pleasures. Also symbolise the mortality of the material body.(ash symbolise semen for tantric kaula worshippers)

five heads- the creator, protector, Destructor, Hiding and Blessing attitudes of the Supreme being.Snake and rudraksha ornaments, tiger skin, elephant skin etc:- Renunciation, extreme indifference towards luxuries. Sees snake and jewel ornaments the same. Snake also symbolize kundalini when it is depicted with three and a half folds.

Blue neck - the selfless serviceSitting on snow mountain without being affected - reaching the state where bodily afflictions doesnt matterHalf closed eye- inward looking attitude, content with the selftrident- the three qualities, satwa, rajas, tamas, which is separated from the self, or may be present past, future, or awakened, sleep and dream states of the creation.

deer in between his fingers means the flexible deer-like mind has been conquered and made stillaxe- cuts away attachmentkamandalu pot, the penance rod , rosary etc all symbolize renunciation.parvati near him/on his lap/half his body etc symbolize his power.

Goddess dancing on his dead body shows that all the colorful creation is basically supported by the attribute-less(dead) Brahman.see more at:http://www.hinduwebsite.com/hinduism/siva.asp
