Guest guest
Shivaya Namaha, A KING WAS passing through a forest in all pomp and pageantry, with his army and retinue behind him. He came across a man with not even a cod-piece on, lying on the ground, with one leg cocked over the other. He was laughing away, apparently supremely happy, contented with himself and all the world. The king was struck with the manfs happy state and sent for him. But when the kingfs men approached the nude ascetic and delivered the kingfs message, he took absolutely no notice and continued in his ascetic bliss. On being told of this, the king himself went to the man and even then the man took no notice. Thereupon it struck the king that this must be no common man, and said, eSwami, you are evidently supremely happy. May we know what is the secret of such happiness and from which guru you learnt it?f Thereupon the ascetic told the king, eI have had twentyfour gurus. Everything, this body, the earth, the birds, some instruments, some persons, all have taught mef. All the things in the world may be classed as either good or bad. The good taught him what he must seek. Similarly, the bad taught him what he must avoid. The ascetic was Dattatreya, the avadhuta. Guest guest
Dear Ramya, Guru Datta's 24 GURUS were EARTH (PATIENCE & doing good to others), WATER (Purity of thought & actions), AIR(No attachment though moving constantly), FIRE(glow with splendour of self knowledge & austerity), SKY(Self is all pervading though it has contact with anybody), MOON(self is always perfect & changeless. It is onlythe limiting adjuncts that cast shadows over it), SUN(Brahman appears different because of the bodies caused by reflection through the mind), PIGEONS(Attachment is the root cause of earthly bondage), PYTHON(to be unmindful of food & be content with what you get to eat), OCEAN(To remain unmoved among all the various sorts of temptations, difficulties & troubles), MOTH(To control the sense of sight & fix the mind on the self), BLACK BEE(Gathering food from different households & yet not being a burden on them), BEES(It is useless to hoard things), MALE ELEPHANT(to destroy LUST), DEER(Never listen to lewd songs), FISH(never to be greedy for food & fall to baits offered by others), DANCING GIRL PINGALA-FALLEN WOMEN (Abandonment of hope leads to contentment), RAVEN(you become happy when you abandon sensual pleasures), CHILD(to be cheerful always), MAIDEN"s BANGLES (Living among many creates discord, disturbance, dispute & quarrel, hence best to remain alone in solitude), SERPENT(does not build it's own hole,it lives in holes dug by others-thus an ascetic should not build a home for himself but live in temples or caves built by others, ARROW MAKER(Intense concentration of mind), SPIDER(like a spider getting caught in it's own web.Man makes a web of his own ideas & gets entangled in it,hence abandon all wordly thoughts) & BEETLE ( give up all attachments to the body & attain liberation.Meditate on the self by constantly contemplating on it) ' Like the LORD,if we can ascribe to each passing hour of the day one quality,we too could learn from every hour as our GURU & become better human beings. -----Fight back spam!
