We are living in a permissive society. We, Brahmanas have deviated from Sastraic injunctions and practices followed by our ancestors/eldersto a large extent. To-day`s Brahmana practices will not be accepted as adequte by our ancestors, had they been alive now. True, times have changed and we are required to adapt to changing times. But samskaras which we ought to observe/perform/ follow etc. as per Sastraic injunctions should not be compromised/ improvised. One may not find it convenient to perform tarpanam on all the 15 days of the Mahalaya Paksham. But he ought to perform Mahalaya Sraddham on at least one of the days of the Paksham, apart from performing Amavasya Tarpanam on Mahalay Amavasya Day. This is the least that one should do for his dead ancestors, irrespective of whether he has performed Gaya Sraddham or not. I have expressed my personal opinion in the matter. I do not expect that my views have to be accepted by all. I am not a religious leader or a master in Dharma Sastras. I leave the forum open for the views from other learned members. If I were to repeat, in my humble opinion, one has to continue performing Sraddham for his deceased father and mother as long as he is alive.G.Balasubramanian nice1iam <nice1iam (AT) (DOT) co.in>Iyer123@ .comWednesday, September 9, 2009 10:56:47 AM[iyer123] Re: Gaya sraadha and Mahalaya paksha As per the understanding given by the trsiyengar.com website's webmaster on the Mahalaya Srardham, one should continue to perform the Mahalaya Srardham, even if Gaya Srardham is performed. His clarification sounds realistic though I failed to ask for the authentic source. According to Mr. TRS Iyengar of the website - Srivaishnavam Practices , which was obtained through a private mail exchange, the Mahalaya Srardham & Tharppanam are not performed just for the Pithrus, but also for the GaruNya Pithrus, who are closely related to the departed souls and ofcourse, to the person who performs the Tharpana. Hence, the Tharpanam offering to the Garunya Pithrus (the special additional two koorchams are put in between Pithru & Mathru vargam) are the most vital and important one in Mahalaya Srardham that one should understand. The underlining point here is, one should and must perform the Mahalaya Srardham, even after performing Gaya Srardham, for the sake of the Garunya Pithrus. It is the simple logic. Whether rationale or irrational, one should understand the logic behind the rituals. Blindly stating that some elderly person has said so, one should stop it means, there is no authenticity of it. Let the other senior and elderly members an d learned persons give us a clear guidance.
