Opal - Gemstone Like Human Emotions

Dear Gaurav,

Thank you so very much for providing so much info about each gemstone. I have been reading your posts with great interest.

On the matter of scratching of stones in rings, you mention that opals are easily scratched. Does this impair the refractive index/properties and render it useless in terms of planetary gemology?

I have been wearing an emerald that is very old and has been handed down by my great grandmother to my mother who passed it to me. It is very clear light green colour but has numerous scratches most of which occured after I fitted it into a ring. (Originally it was in a necklace of my great grandmother). Because of the scratches the shine from the top surface has diminished and it appears dull. Would this impair the properties and beneficial value? Do these scratches coming so easily on the emerald indicate poor quality or is it normal for this stone to get scratched?

Shall appreciate yours as well as Richards advice on this please.

Water is the main ingredient of opals, so do not allow them to dry out. Opals are easily scratched, especially when set in a ring.

They can also be easily shattered either by hitting them or a rapid change in temperature.

Opals help with spiritual and religious life, finances, family life, and they improve one’s beauty. They help develop the

ability to foretell the future, and many astrologers use them for this purpose. They can also help with legal cases.With use,

opals become dull. After some time, they should be replaced.

Opal is a soft stone and can contain up to 20% of water. It should be protected from heat and strong light, which can

dry it out and cause it to crack. Extra care should also be taken to protect opals from scratches, sharp blows and household chemicals.

Opals are used as birthstones. They are said to be good for those born in October.

For ages people have been believing in the healing power of Opal. It is reported to be able to solve depressions and to help its

wearer find the true and real love. Opals are supposed to further enhance the positive characteristics for people born under

the zodiac sign of Cancer. Black Opal is recommended to those born under Scorpio, and Boulder Opal is the lucky stone for Aries.

The fantastic color play of Opal reflects changing emotions and moods of people. Fire and water, the sparkling images

of Boulder Opal, the vivid light flashes of Black Opal or the soft shine of Milk Opal – striking contrasts characterise the

colorful world of this fascinating gemstone. Maybe this is the reason why it depends on our daily mood which Opal we prefer.

Dear Sriman,What are your worries about emerald? If it is surface scratch it can be easily removed; but if its a crack that goes internally then it's junk and not Jyotish quality. Did you know that "Jyotish quality" emeralds cannot be oiled!? Opal is not related to any planet or sign, is not mentioned in Shastra, and is not astrological. No one involved with Planetary Gemology has any use for Opal. In fact, it is a down-right unlucky gem due to is extreme weakness. Don't waste your time putting Western gem info here, as we are Sacred-Objects, or Hindu-Buddhist Gemology group.

Dear Richard,

Thanks for your response. The scratches are superficial and very light but they make the appearance of the surface dull. My query was- does emerald scratch easily when worn in a ring? I thought that good quality emeralds are too hard to develop scratches? One Gem dealer in India said that Emeralds are softer stones and scratches are normal.... SHall appreciate your comments.
