dear friends

album tantric products in the photos section of this group.

have never dealt in manis or animal pearls earlier and this is the first time

that i got this elephant pearl. i was told by the wildlife authorities that

there is a ban only on ivory trade and not on elephant pearl. elephants are

still reared for work and as pets by various people especially in kerala and

assam besides being hired by the temples. some people even make it work for

carrying timber and in cities few make it work for a joyride by children and

there is no ban on the use of elephant and its other products but only ivory is

banned.

this elephant pearl is very hard and strong like a stone and is believed to give

whosoever possess it, strength and power of an elephant. devotees of lord

ganesha will be blessed directly by having this, as believed. let me state

beforehand that i do not have any scriptural references to elephant pearl and it

is up to the discerning collector who wants this out of interest, lest am pretty

happy to have lord ganesha with me in the form of this elephant pearl.

Dear All

There is method of ID devised, based on Raman Spectroscopy.

As I do not have a sofe E-copy, and only a hard copy, I will posted as I am back

in big apple.

RARE IVORIES

Challenging identifications

Grahame Brown

A lecture presented on the author's behalf by Hylda Bracewell FGAA to the

Scientific Programme of the 2007 Federal Conference of the G.A.A that was held

in Hobart, Tasmania

on 19th May 2007.

Excepted irritatingly typed: - (E & O accepted as usual drunk)QUOTE:-

THE ELEPHANT PEARL

Elephant pearls are the equivalent of pulp stones in human teeth. They are

formed from rounded calcified masses of dentine (ivory) and are recovered from

the large soft tissue pulps of the continuously growing teeth (tusks) of mammals

such as the elephant (recent and fossil).

These rare objects, which are known as Gajamukta (gaja-muthu) are much revered

and valued by members of the Buddhist faith - particularly in Sri Lanka. It is

commonly believed that the person who possesses a Gajamukta will be very

successful in life and could become king.

Identifying elephant pearls requires a mix of observational skill and advanced

spectroscopy.

As the elephant pearl consists of a rounded mass of dentine, its surface may be

patterned by curving growth layers; but the external surface of the elephant

pearl will not display an engine-turned surface.

This observation allows its ready discrimination

from a shaped elephant molar or carved elephant ivory; but will not allow

identification of the species of mammal responsible for producing the pearl.

To achieve this discrimination requires use of Raman spectroscopy to determine

the relative intensities two specific bands in the suspect elephant pearl's 1064

nm excited Raman spectra ... vide the protocol established by Edwards et al.

(1995, 1997) and detailed in (1995) Spectrochimica Acta. Part A. 51, 2073;

(1997) Journal of Molecular Structure. 435, 49-58; and (1997) Spectrochimica.

Acta Part A. 53, 2403-

These identifying bands are the 2937 cm-1 band that has been attributed to a

specific proteinaceous component of the ivory, and the 960 cm-1 band that been

attributed to inorganic phosphate in the carbonated hydroxyapatite of the

dentine.

The identifying I2937 /I960ratios for various ivories are summarised in the

following table.

TYPE OF IVORY I2940/I960 RATIO

African elephant 0.47

Sperm whale 0.45

Asian elephant 0.35

Walrus 0.34

Hippopotamus 0.33

Narwhal 0.16

So: Q3. Which is the elephant pearl?

FOTO 1 ? OR FOTO 2 (I adapted the sentence to suit this post and uplod of album

in this group)

A3. The specimen to the upper right (ADAPTED AS FOTO 2 FOR this post/message of

this group)is the true elephant pearl, for it had the I2940/I960 ratio of 0.36

that identified its ivory that of the Asiatic elephant.

dear friends

as mentioned in the previous mail, due to inexperience and lack of complete

knowledge, i am not able to answer queries on the elephant pearl which i got by

luck for the first time and the same is already given away to a discerning

devotee.

in view of the above, i have deleted the photo of the elephant pearl from the

photos section as i dont have any elephant pearl with me anymore.

with best wishes and blessings
