Guest guest
Respected Shri. Richard ji and Ole, Ayurveda is not useless. However, it has limitations as under: Ayurveda is a slow process. Wrong identification of plants : There are many examples where supplier who is not a expert in medicinal plants supplies wrong material. The classic example is of 'Ashokarishta' which is a poplar Ayurvedic formulation used in mensutation problems of women. The medicine is produced from the plant popularly known as 'Seeta's Ashok'. Botanical name of the plant is Saraca indica or Saraca ashoka from the family Leguminosae. However, there is one more plant having similar vernacular name 'Ashoka' in few Indian languages. This plant is commonly available and is planted as avenue tree. This species is Polyalthia longifolia (variety pendulata) of the Family Annonaceae. Since Saraca ashoka is a rare plant, it is a regular practice of traders is to supply bark of Polyalthia pendulata as 'Ashoka' bark. This certainly affects quality of medicine. The other example is of 'Chirata Plant'. The actual chirata plant is of the species Swertia chirata and is available in Himalayan zones and mainly from Nepal. This plant is a wonderful medicine in many medicinal preparations. However, the plant is rare in India and therefore commonly available species Andrographis paniculata is regularly supplied under the name 'Chirata' by traders. Andrographis paniculata is also a medicinal plant having a strong bitter taste like Chirata, however medicinal properties of both the plants differ. Different ecotypes show variaion in contents of active principle of medicinal plants. I would like to mention two examples. The medicinal plant Withania somnifera (popularly known as Ashwagandha) is well known for its properties. Withania somnifera ecotype from Rajasthan area has excellent contents of Withaniferin, Withanaloids. However, ecotype from Maharashtra has very low contents. The other example is of Commiphora weightii (Guggul plant). Again, ecotype from Rajasthan has excellent contents of Guggulosterones than other ecotypes. The third example is of Rauwolfia serpentena (Serpina plant), this plant is commonly used to extract drug Ajmalacine for high blood pressure. Ecotypes of this plant from Western ghats of Maharashtra show better contents of active principle than other ecotypes. Personally I am of the opinion that microelements and other ecological and biological factors may be contributing in medicinal properties. In classic texts of Ayurveda it is mentioned that perticular time (Prahar) for collection of medicinal plants is most important. Few of the plants are required to be collected in the early morning before Sunrise. It is also mentiioned that few of the plants are to be collected on certain 'Thithis' of Krishna Paksha or Shuddha Paksha of a month. It is also mentioned in Ayurveda to pray the plant before collecting the plant material. Unfortunately, most of the traders do not adopt these practices. Due to adultrated material in the market few of the reputed companies have established their own farms for the regular supply of medicinal plant material. However, supply of such authentic material is very low compared to its demand. Personally I am of the opinion that Ayurveda is a good system of medication however has limitations. The above points have been discussed in many conferences on Ayurveda and medicinal plants. I had attended few as a part of my research career. Homeopathy shows miracles and is much better than Ayurveda, I feel. It is true that allopathic medicines have side effects, however, ignoring allopathy is a suicidal approach. Thanking you and with regards, Chandrashekhar Phadke The other most important problem with Ayurveda is adultration in medicinal plants used in Ayurvedic medicines. Most of the Ayurvedic preparations are made either from bark of the plant or from roots. Traders and suppliers in India mix lot of junk in such dried roots and bark since it is difficult to identify roots and bark. --- On Fri, 13/2/09, Richard Shaw Brown <rsbj66 wrote: Richard Shaw Brown <rsbj66 Re: Most effective herbal medicine: Vedic or Chinese ??sacred-objects Date: Friday, 13 February, 2009, 12:59 AM Hi Ole,I really don't believe Ayurveda is useless. Guest guest
> So which ayurvedic doctors did you consult while being sick in India? Did they have any reputation? Did you follow their advice to the letter?---SHOULD I HAVE MY LAWYER PRESENT TO ANSWER THIS NAZI INQUISITION? Ayurveda is not simply about taking some medicine like in the allopathic system, you have to follow a particular diet, routines etc according to the disease, for the herbal medicines to be effective. For many chronic diseases it is necessary to take pancha karma therapy.---OLE, I KNOW THIS. GIVE ME A BREAK (I'M NOT A BEGINNER). ---BOTTOM LINE, AS YOU HAVE POINTED OUT, IS " DISEASE = PAIN " - AND FOR PAIN AYURVEDA AND CHINESE MEDICINE ARE USELESS (IN MY OPINION). ---NOW TAKE IT EASY!
