Scientifically, these are the fossil shells of a fresh water snail species under the genus Physa. Though, these shells are sinistral or 'Right Handed Shells', are not treated a sacred objects. In simple words, they are not used in Sri. Lakshmi, Sri Vishnu or Sri. Shiva sadhana or pooja. All right handed shells are not treated as sacred shells. The only right handed or sinistral shells of the species Turbinella pyrum Linn.are treated as sacred object. If sinistral shell is not available, easily available dextral variety of the species Turbinella pyrum is commonly used, which is known as 'Vamawarty Shankh'. In malacology, Turbinella pyrum L. whether left handed or right handed is popularly known as 'Indian Sacred Conch'. No other shell species has this status. Sinistral or 'Right Handed Shells' of Lightning Whelk, Busycon contrarium Conrad are fraudulently sold as "Lakshmi Shank' misguiding devotees.
