Swamy Sharanam,

 

I am Kallidaikurichi Ramesh Subramanian bhagavathar and specialize in performing Sastha Bhajanai especially Varavu paatugal. I have my own group called Bhaktanjali Bhajan Mandali and have been performing all over India for 15 years and have sung at atleast more than 250 Sastha Preethis alone apart from other sampradya namasankeerthanam. I hail from Kallidaikurichi in Tirunelveli and the deity in the Sastha temple here is called Poorna Pushkala Sametha Kulathoor Ayyan. There is a sastha preethi which happens here every year in month of aadi masam  which is the oldest. The concept of Sastha Preethi itself has emanated from this place and the rule is wherever anybody anywhere in the world conducts a Sastha Preethi they should first send kanikkai to this deity and seek ashirvadam before proceeding. The varavu paatugal completely refers to this deity " Kulathoor Ayyan " right from the first shlokam " Kunjara Vadana " to the mangalam 'Vediyar Thaan Pughazhum " .It is a misconception that this is a reference to " Kulathupzhai " ayyapan and also that the varavu sampradayam came from Kerala.  The temple is more than 900 years old as research says it.

 

 

The Sastha Preethi here is a two day affair with first day with sastha preethi with sthaanam for dharma sastha, chella pillai, sangili sastha etc,. and varavu songs being sung in morning and evening followed by managala snanam of the people who sit in the sthanam. The kambangudi family originally hails from Kallidaikurichi to whom lord dharma sastha said " Kambangudi kinaan udadimai " kambangudi sastha ki adimai " when he was oferred kambam " ragi " centuries back. I have been singing varavu paatugal here for the last three years and hopefully the lord will continue to bless me with more.
