I want to tell few words regarding Navaratri celebration. Navaratri means nine nights. Darkness is associated with nights. What is this darkness? It is the darkness of ignorance. The purpose of the Navaratri celebration is to enable all to get rid of nine types of darkness which have taken hold of him. When man forgets God and desires to enjoy the benefits of Nature, he becomes ultimately a demon like Ravan who brought about his own destruction. To secure the grace of the Lord, one has to have purity of heart, purity of the speech,purity of action.This triple purity should be maintained . It can be understood by looking at the molecular explanation of the word Navaraatri. Each word is like a molecule and has a deeper meaning behind it. In the word Navaraatri, Nav means nine and Raatri means night which symbolizes darkness or evils. As such, the purpose of the festival is to overcome the nine types of darkness or evils - lust, anger, greed, illusion, pride, habit, ego, ignorance, and the evil or darkness of the unknown. As one overcomes these evils, one realizes ones' infinite form, that which is represented by the festival of Dasharaa, that follows Navaraatri.
