Dear All,

Wishing all of you a HAPPY SANKRANTHI !!

Sankranti, also known as Makar Sankranthi, marks the Sun's transit into Makara Rashi. This day marks the beginning of Uttarayana Punyakalam. Sankranti 2010 date is January 14. It is celebrated throughout India with various names. Makara Sankramana Snan is the most observed ritual during Sankranti.

Sankranti is celebrated as Pongal in Tamilnadu for 3 days. In Andhrapradesh and Karnataka, Sankranthi is celebrated for four days. Bhogi, Sankranti, Kanuma and Mukkanuma are the four festivals during Makar Sankranthi.

Bhogi marks the beginning of Sankranti festival. Sacred bonfire is the main ritual during Bhogi. This ritual is called as ‘Bhogi Mantalu’ in Andhra Pradesh. Kite flying, Rangoli designs (Pookalam, kolam or muggulu), Gobbemma, Gangireddu and haridasu are the main aspects of Sankranthi festival. Kanuma, third day during Sankranti festival, is associated with the legend of lifting of Govardhan Giri by Lord Krishna. Mukkanuma, the final day of Sankranti festival, is celebrated to worship cattle.

On this auspicious day, people in Karnataka distribute Yellu and bella (Sesame seeds and Jaggery) and greet with the words

"Ellu bella thindu, Olle Maathu Aadu"

(Eat sesame seeds and speak only good).

During Surya Grahan, devout Hindus perform several rituals and chant different prayers and mantras. Hindu Pregnant women chant Santana Gopala Mantra during the Suryagrahan.Pregnant women are adviced to stay inside(at home) and not observe the eclipse.

Most devout Hindus chant the Ashtakshara Mantra dedicated to Shri Krishna or the Astakshari Mantra dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Ashtakshara mantra dedicated to Lord Krishna is Shri Krishna ha sharnam mama.

Astakshari Mantra dedicated to Lord Vishnu is 'Om Namoh Narayan Ya namah.'

Mahamrityunjay Mantra and Shiva Panchakshari Mantra dedicated to Lord Shiva are also chanted during the Surya Grahan period.

Shiva Panchakshari Mantra is Om Namah Shivaya

Mahamrityunjay Mantra is

Om Tryambhakam YajamaheSugandhim PushtivardhanamUrvarukamiva BandhananMrityor Mukshiya Maamritat

The Santana Gopala Mantra chanted by pregnant women is

Om Devaki Sudha GovindaVasudeva Jagath PatheDehimey ThanayamKrishna ThwamahamSaranam Kadhahaa

Deva Deva JagannathaGothra Vridhi Karap PrabhoDehimey Thanayam SheegramAyushmandham Yashashreenam!

Mantras dedicated to Lord Surya including the Gayatri Mantra, surya atharvanasheersha and Aditya Stotram are also chanted.

Apart from these, those who are initiated into srIvidhyA are adviced to read, first ganapathI atharvana sheersha mantra(as it becomes a siddha-mantra when read during grahana samaya) and then chant panchadasaakshari or mahashodasi mantra.Lalitha Sahasranama,Trishathy,Sahasraakshari Vidhya,Trailokya Mohanachakra,Lalitha Trishati,Srichakra Puja, rashmi mala, etc can also be chanted.

The idols kept at home and the puja room must be washed and cleaned after the eclipse-time.

One must take bath before the grahana and then after the rituals take bath again.Sandhyavandana is performed twice(at the time of grahana and then at the time of grahana-moksha) during eclipse time.

I wish all of us make best use of grahana samaya as

a mantra chanted during this time is equivalent of being chanted many crore times!

So maybe I can also add:

Happy Sadhana Time!
