Dear Dattabandhus,

Kukkuteshwara Swamy Temple entrance

Pithapuram is one of the very old towns of Andhra pradesh. It's old name is Pishtapuram. The names Sri peetham / Peethika puram / Puruhutika puram came from the Puruhutika Shakti Peetham(ashtadasha shakthi peetham fame) present here.

My paternal grandmother had great faith in this temple.Though I have never sene her except by way of photos. She influenced my father to consider Datta-upasana.She hailed from Rajamahendravaram(Rajamundry) and maybe because of the East Godavari influence worshipped the deity or maybe because she found recourse in faith towards the deity, she worshipped, no one knew but She used to refer to it as 'Dakshina Kasi'.My paternal aunt(father's sister) who lives in MVP Colony,Vizag, goes to this temple to this day every year despite many calamities in her life. She goes there for the major festivals Mahashivaratri, Sarannavarathri and Kaartika Masam celebrated at this temple.

The Area passed into the hands of the Vishnukundin during the rule of Vikramendravarma I. They ruled for over two centuries from the first quarter of the 5th Century A.D. or slightly earlier. The records discovered indicate that their dominion extended over Vishakhapatnam, West Godavari, Krishna and Guntur besides the present East Godavari district. Ranadurjaya, a member of the Durjaya family, ruled pistapuram or Pithapuram as a Vassal of Vikramendravarma in recognition of his services to the State. Another Vishnukundin ruler Indrabhattaraka, defeated the rulers of Vasish-Takula and re-established his authority over this region. His success was, however, shortlived. The early Gangas of Kalinga with the support of some petty rulers, completely routed Indrabhattaraka's army.

This resulted in Vishnukundin's power suffering a severe set-back. Indrabhattaraka was followed on the throne by a few others belonging to the same family. madhavavarma III was the last important ruler of this family. Madhavavarma III was, however, killed in a battle. He was succeeded by his son, Manchannabhattaraka who strove hard to maintain his hold over the ancestral dominion without much success.

Later, the western Chalukya ruler of Badami, Pulakesin II, with the help of his brother Kubjavishnu, attacked Pistapura and emerged victorious. Kubjavishnu was given the newly acquired territories in the east, in token of appreciation of the services rendered by him.

The rulers of Eastern Chalukya dynasty founded by Kubjavishnu, ruled first from Pistapura, next from Vengi and then from Rajamahendri (Rajahmundry). Chalukya Bhima I, who ruled furing A.D.892-921, built a temple in honour of Siva at Draksharama. In the subsequent period which marked a civil war for power, Amma I, son of Vijayaditya IV, came out victorious and ruled the kingdom for seven years. He was succeeded by his son Vijayaditya V, who was ousted from power within a fortnight of his accession. He was compelled to take refuge in the fort of Pithapuram, where he founded a dynasty.

After this Koppula Prolaya Nayaka of the Padma Nayaka Velama Caste ruled Pistapuram under the Kakateeya rulers and when the Kakateeyas were defeated. He was part of the Confederation of Nayaks who revolted against the Sultans and drove them out of Warangal. He became independent rulers one the Musunuri Nayaks were eastablished on the throne of Warangal.

Lord Dattatreya in Pithapuram

Where is Pithapuram ?

(Madhava Swamy Koneru taken by Sri Satish Miriyala)Pithapuram is located in the East-Godavari district of Andhra pradesh near Kakinada. The main temple in Pithapuram is of Kukkuteswara swamy. It is present in the South most corner of the village. The second important temple in Pithapuram is of Kunthi madhava swamy.Nearest Busstation: PithapuramNearest Railway station: Pithapuram, KakinadaNearest Airport: Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam

The temple of Kukkuteswara swamy is big in size with a highly sculptured Raja gopuram as it's entrance in the North.Once you enter into the temple, complete the pradishana and come in front of Dwaja Stamba you will be attracted by the “Eka Sila Nandi (Single Stoned sculpture of Nandi). The Eka Sila is second biggest after Lepakshi Basaveswara Nandi. After entering in to the temple we'll also see a pond called Pada Gaya Sarovaram. The first important thing to do after entering the campus is to sprinkle ourselves with the holy waters of Pada Gaya. Gayasura padamudrikas are present beside Dhwaja sthamba of Kukkuteswara swamy in the main temple. In the South-East corner of the temple Gaya pada Vishnu pada temple is present. There, the big foot-prints are

of Gayasura and small ones are of Lord Vishnu.

Paadagaya Chihnam

Sri MahaVishnu Padam

This complex has a Sarovar after taking bath people offer prayers to their ancestors, as this temple complex is called Pada Gaya.Gayasura's body was cut in three portions and out of that; Head fell at Siro Gaya (Called Gaya in Bihar), 'Below chest portion' (Nabhi) fell in Nabhi Gaya (Jajpur in Orissa) and the Legs (Padas) fell here hence called Pada Gaya.

Padagaya Pushkarini

Lotus in the pond

You might all be wondering why keep an asura's padukas there alongwith Vishnu's!

To know about Pada Gaya we have to know the story of Gayasura. Gayasura was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. He worshiped Vishnu for a long time. Lord Vishnu appeared before him and asked to take the required boon. Gayasura asked to make his body so pious that every one who sees him will attain Mukti (salvation) immediately! Vishnu accepted it and disappeared.

The Actual story:Gayasura started to grow his body to an enormous size with the help of His Yoga shakti. It was hundreds of kms in height. His wish was to show himself to all so that everybody on the earth attains Mukti. This made Indra (the king of deities) fearful. If everybody attains Mukti easily then what about the sins committed and the Law of Karma? He prayed Trimurthis, Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara. He asked them to tell a solution. They laughed at Indra's request and disappeared. They approached Gayasura in the form of three Brahmins. Gayasura welcomed them. They first requested Him to stop growing as it was against the Law of Karma, but Gayasura would not listen. Then they told Gayasura that they are going to do a very sacred Yagna and for that requested land from him. Gayasura happily accepted to give it. But,

they questioned him where will he give the land? Each and every place on earth has bad incidents in it's history and so unfit for their sacred Yagna.

Gayasura wondered what he should do. He asked them to tell the solution. They told that his body will be the best place! They supported their logic with the boon he got from Vishnu and his wish in giving salvation to everybody! And told that this can be considered as a pious challenge to him and that after the Yagna was over, He can continue to grow in height and give salvation freely to all! He has to face the sins of all people before giving salvation. He has to face many Vighnas (obstacles) both physically and mentally to fullfil his desire. They told that the capabilities of Gayasura can be pre-tested in helping this Yagna.Gayasura accepted. That Yagna was conducted on the pious body for seven days. He developed his etheric-body with his power and slept on the earth. His head was in Gaya of Bihar (Siro gaya), his Navel was in Jajpur of Orissa (Nabhi gaya) and his foot were in Pithapuram of Andhra pradesh state (Pada gaya). The Brahmins started doing Yagna.(Legends say His body was cut and thrown in 3 pieces but then that is not correct as He did not do anything wrong to be rendered that punishment only that in his over-enthusiasm and asuric nature to exaggerate anything he tried to obviate and ignore the law of Karma)Gayasura bore the fire on his body. He was counting the days with the help of crowing of cocks in the early morning. He became frustrated that day by day because of the fire but not moving his body for the word he gave. On the final day Lord Shiva took a form of the cock and crowed at midnight. Considering it as the sign of morning Gayasura woke up. The Yagna was destroyed. The Brahmins felt very

sad. They asked him that if he couldn't control himself for just seven days how he is willing to bear the sins of entire humanity for unlimited time by growing in size? Gayasura realized his mistake. He agreed his fault. However, Trimurthis appeared before him and told that his body will be present as it is and the entire land will become sacred because of him only.He was granted Moksha too and blessed. He entered into samadhi and nirantara tapascharyam and stopped his assinine act of growing in size.

This is the story of Gayasura and Kukkuteswara swamy. The three important places became three Shakti peethas, namely,

Mangala gauri at Gaya

Girija (Bhiraja) at Jajpur

Puruhutika at Pithapuram

Gayasura is a great devotee of lord Vishnu. He was very good at heart. He just took an adventurous decision. The word Asura (demon) in his name is a misnomer. It just means opposite to Suras (deities ruled by Indra). And maybe he opposed inadvertently Indra(the Karmic doler alongwith Yama), He was referred to as an 'Asura'.

Siddhi Ganpathi temple is present in the South side of the temple. The temple of Sri Guru Dattatreya is present in the South-West corner of the temple. This is the only Datta peetham with the idol of Lord Dattatreya. All the remaining ones have Datta padukas as the resemblance of Sri Guru. A holy Audambara vriksha is present beside the temple. The Padukas present at the root of this tree are the real Padukas of Sri Pada Sri vallabha Dattatreya. There are temples of Lord Srirama, Shankaracharya, Ayyappa, Visweswara and Annapurna in the West. In the North-West corner of the campus an old temple of Lord Subrahmanya is present which is very famous relieve devotees from Kuja dosha.

A temple of Chandeeswara swamy is present in the North.

Purhuthaamba(Puruhuthika Devi)

Puruhuti sati mata Pithikapura samsthita |Putravatpalita devi Bhaktanugrahadayini ||

Puruhuthika Amba Dhyana Rupam

The idol of Puruhuthika devi has four hands. They contain bag of seeds (Beeja), axe (Parashu), lotus (Kamala) and a dish (Madhu patra) from lower-right to lower-left in order.Previously there were two sects of Upasakas in Pithapuram worshiping Puruhootika devi. The first one calling her as Puruhootha Lakshmi (Meditating on Kamala and Madhu patra) and worshiping in Samayachara and the second one calling her Puruhoothamba (Meditating on Parashu and Beeja) and worshiping in Vamachara. There is also a tale that the original statue of Puruhutika devi was buried under the temple which was worshiped by them.

Once Indra cheated Ahalya (wife of Gautama maharshi) in the form of Gautama and was cursed by the Maharshi. Indra lost his testes and got the symbols of Yoni all over his body(Indra is thus called 'Sahasrabhaga',Bhaga menaing 'yoni'). He felt very sad and prayed Gautama a lot. Finally the Rishi accepted and told that the Yoni symbols will look like eyes, so that Indra can be called as Sahasraksha there after.Indra dissatisfied with the modification of the curse went to suchindram and did penance on Lord Datta and became absolved of the eyes.

But Indra lost his testes too and wanted to regain them. He wanted to regain them and also get Gnana as he became vexed with the whole issue. He left his kingdom in heaven, came to Piithikapuri and did Tapasya for Jaganmata incognito. After a long time Jaganmata appeared before him and blessed him with testes and spiritual wealth.Indra was very happy and prayed her and the Devi was nomenclated as Puruhutika devi (One who was worshiped by Indra). After a very long time Jagadguru Sripada vallabha took birth in Pithapuram. He too worshiped Puruhutika devi and realized his self. He is an incarnation of Dattatreya.Sadhana:Every year in the month of Ashviyuja Navaratri festival is conducted in the temple and on this day sadhana of Puruhutika devi is done which includes Indra as Rishi and Kukkuteswara as Guru.Next comes the temple

of Durga devi. Puruhutika Shakti peetham is present beside Durga temple. In the North-East corner of the campus, there is a temple of Lord Kala bhairava. Kalabhairava is the Kshetra palaka of the temple and it is a must to worship him.In the main temple we'll come across a big Nandi made up of Ekasila Salagramam (Single holy stone). It is very beautiful. The Shiva linga of Lord Kukkuteswara is previously present in the form of a cock's head, but now it is covered with a new normal linga. Humkarini Durga is present in the left of Kukkuteswara swamy facing South. She is called as Shivaa. A small temple of Rajarajeswari mata is present beside Shiva temple.

It is a very old temple of Lord Vishnu. It is one of the Pancha Madhava Kshetras. Here the Lord is worshiped by Kunthi devi (Mother of Pandavas). There are Upaalayas(sub-temples) for Lakshmi devi and Goda devi.

Once upon a time there lived a great Rishi by name "Ela". He was doing penance for Lord Shiva at Pithapuram. At that time the area was in draught. The villagers of Pithapuram asked Ela Rishi to relieve them from draught. Ela Rishi told that if he could get the Darshan of Lord Shiva he will ask a boon for them. He continued Tapasya. Lord Shiva appeared before him. Ela Rishi asked Shiva for a river. Lord Shiva gave river and told the Rishi that this river will come behind him untill next day moning. Ela Rishi was passing through the Kimmeera seema (Area ruled by a demon Kimmeera) and reached Pithapuram. Lord Shiva wanted to test the Rishi. He appeared as a crowing cock again(just as in the case of Gayasura). Ela Rishi felt that the next day morning has came. He became depressed and sat there. The river stopped there itself. Ela Rishi prayed Shiva to mix the

river in the Ocean, so that it will become holy. After a lot of prayer Shiva appeared before him as Kukkuteswara and told that this was his wish to stop the river there. He also told that the river will become holy as it ended in Pada Gaya. By the boon of Shiva the name of the river became Ela river. It's water is used to worship Kukkuteswara swamy.

Lord Kukkuteshwara Swamy Linga(Cock headed Linga)

In olden days the people never used to partake the meat of cock in this place but with christian missionaries and their influence, some changes have happened in the place.

Another legend of Kunthi Madhava

Lord Indra killed a Brahmin named Vritrasura. Because of killing the Brahmin Brahma hatya(Biggest of all the sins) was acquired by Indra. He consecrated five temples of Lord Vishnu to come out of that sin. They are-1.Bindu madhava-Kasi2.Veni madhava-Prayaga(Allahabad)3.Kunthi madhava-Pithapuram 4.Setu madhava-Rameswaram5.Sundara madhava-Anantha padmanabham(Trivendram)

Twashta was one of the prajaapati created by Lord Brahma for increasing the mankind.

Twashta had one son by name Viswarupa[Thrisiraska, as he had three heads].Viswarupa was a great person and was jitendriya. Viswarupa took the advice of his father and started tapasya and was doing it with great devotion .Lord Indra was afraid that Viswarupa may take away his throne with his tapassakti.Indra wanted to disturb Viswarupa . Indra sent all the apsaras like rambha, menaka and others who made futile efforts to disturb Viswarupa. They returned to Indra and said that they could not disturb Trisiraska from his tapasya.Lord Indra got angry and he himself went to disturb Trisiraska , but he failed to do so.Then provoked by his durmanah: he cut the head of Trisiraska with his vajrayudha.Though his head was cut Trisiraska's body was shining as if alive. Then Indra still afraid that Trisiraska was alive, asked Taksha to chop the heads of Trisiraska and bribed him with

some boons if he did so .Taksha though hesitated in the begining, was attracted to the bribe offered by Indra and chopped the heads of Trisiraska .Different types of birds originated from the chopped heads of Trisiraska.

Twashta heard the death of his beloved son Trisiraska and was full of anger towards Indra and he did a Abhichaara homa and created a maasive gaint from his krodhagni and named him Vritrasura as he was born to give him relief from his duhkha(Sorrow). As Vritrasura was born he was huge and asked his father to order him what to do.Thwashta told him the story of his elder brother who was killed by Lord Indra and asked him to kill Indra and make him happy.

Vritrasura went to tapasya and did tapasya for hundred years for Lord Brahma. Indra wanted to disturb his tapasya also but he failed to do so.Lord Brahma appeared and asked Vritrasura what he wanted. Vritraasura asked Brahma to give energy to defeat Lord Indra and also a boon such he cuold not be killed in war by any wet or dry weapon .Lord Brahma gave all the boons and went back.Vritrasura went back to his father and told about his boons.Twashta was happy and encuoraged his son to go to war against Indra who killed his elder son.

Vritrasura defeated Lord Indra in the war and Twashta was happy , but he warned his son to be cautious abuot Indra who was cunning.Indra who could not defeat Vritrasura in the war and wanted to kill Vritrasura by cheating him as a friend.

Indra planned a plot with Saptarshis who went to Vritrasura and said that Indra wanted to be a friend of him.Vritrasura believed the words of the Saptarshis sent by Indra and commited to be a friend of Lord Indra. Twashta warned Vritrasura about Indra but he did not hear the words of his father.

One auspicious day Lord Indra to end the menace of vritrasura did a Yagna for Lord Vishnu and with the help of Lord Vishnu killed Vritrasura in the afternoon time with his Vajrayudha which he concealed in the froth of the ocean. As Indra killed Vritrasura who was the son of Twashta who was a Prajaapathi a successor Lord Brahma he acquired the sin of brahma hatya.Though a brahmin by his birth as he was created from anger and desire to kill, against Indra who is sura(devata) he became Asura(enemy of sura).

Swayambhu Sri Dattatreya Swamy is also in the Temple Complex. Sripada Srivallbha Swamy's idol is worshipped separately in the same complex. It is the only place where an idol of Sri Datta incarnation is worshipped. Rest of the two places Kurugadda and Ganaga puram Swamy's padukas are being worshipped.(Nowadays modernday saints install vigrahas of all datta saints and worship them.)

Sripaada srivallabha

In 1320 A. D. in Sree Kshetra Pithikapura in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh Sree Dattatreya Swamy was born as the first Datta incarnation under the divine name of Sreepada Sreevallabha to the couple Appalaraju Sarma and Sumati. They were Datta devotees and belonged to Aapasthamba sect. Afterwards He incarnated as the second incarnation in Karanjapura in Maharastra with the name Sree Nrusimha Saraswati. In Guru Charitra the importance of such Sreepada Sreevallabha was explained merely in five chapters but, in this book Sreepada Sreevallabha Charitaamrutam in every chapter (53 Chapters) it vividly described about Sree Sreepada Sreevallabha. This great book is really a divine elixir. In this book all about Sreepada's life, His Leelas (sportive plays), His greatness, His highly elevated preachings and His incredible miracles are abundantly presented. This book

makes the reader forget this world and brings about a feeling of being in the very presence of Sree Sreepada. The sportive pastimes of Sreepada are like the childhood sportive diversions of Sree Krishna. These 'Leelas' give indescribable joy. With this joy transcendent corporeality is attained. Sree Sreepada made this biography to be written in His own life time by Sri Shankar Bhatt, a resident of Karnataka Province who was His dear disciple and a great devotee.

In the words of Sripada Vallabhava Garu Himself:

"

This great sacred book named Sreepada Sreevallabha Charitaamrutam a kalpataruvu (a celestial tree which fulfils all wishes) to devotees. This becomes a book where every letter of it is true. Sound only will be there in the sky. I have dikkus (directions) for My robes. Therefore, I am called Digambara. Reading of this book greatly helps in correcting the mental world. Benefits of this world and the other world accrue to those who make a paaraayana of this book. Know that each letter in this equals to the vedic sayings. The Sanskrit copy which you are writing will be retained in the form of sound many fathoms deep beneath the audumbara tree in My Maha Sams

than. The heavenly sounds emanating from there will not be heard by skinny ears.

Those who receive My call in their heart will surely come for My darshan. I am always alert in the protection of My devotees. A Telugu translation also for your Sanskrit work comes. It will come into light in the 33rd generation of Sri Baapanaarya. It will be translated into many languages. The divine experiences and protection will be the same in whatever language it is read. "

It has happened exactly like that a Telugu translation came to light in the 33rd generation of Sri Baapanarayana

When all people read and recollect this sacred biography, they will get rid of all worries of worldly existence and be rewarded with the grace of Sree Sreepada Sreevallabha. As a consequence of that, they will get happiness, peace and equanimity. Let them encourage all their relatives, kith and kin and friends to read and earn the compassion of Sreepada Sreevallabha and be gratified.

Sripada Vallabha vigraha in Pithapuram(Utsava murthy)--Looks like Ayyappa Swamy a bit

Sreepada was born in the early hours of Ganesh Chathurdhi in 'Chitra' star, in Simha (Leo) Lagna and Tula (Libra) raasi. About Sreepada it was mentioned that He was an incarnation of Sree Datta, and as His Feet were marked with all auspicious features, He bears a worthy name as Sreepada Sreevallabha. It was further noted that His horoscope should not be given to anyone and that it would reach in course of time through Akshya Kumar of Tripura belonging to Jina religion. All that would happen according to divine plan and it would reach Pithapuram as a part of divine play. When Sreepada Sreevallabha was born, a cobra with three hoods was holding its hoods as an umbrella where ever He was kept for 18 days. He came out of the mother's womb as a dazzling illumination! Sumati Maharani fainted immediately after he was born. Auspicious musical notes from musical

instruments were heard from the labour room. After some time an invisible voice warned all people to leave the room. Four vedas, eighteen puraanas, great persons arrived in the shape of brilliant lights to Great Sreepada's body and merged into it. Sacred vedic mantras were heard outside the room. Silence spread for sometime like the silence of a big storm.

Recently in April 2008, another temple Akhanda Datta Brundavan has been constructed as Saibaba is the main Idol with his earlier incarnations namely Sri Pada Srivallbha Swamy(Pithapuram), Sri Nrusimha Saraswathi swamy(Ganagapur in Karnataka (Near Gulbarga,) Swamy Samardha (Akkalkot Maharaj)in Maharashtra, Sri Manik Prabhu (Bidar in Karnataka) (near to Hyderabad). This temple was inaugurated with the pious hands of Guruji Chandra Bhanu Satpathy Ji of Chatrapur, New Delhi near to famous Qutub Minar.

It is present in the South most corner of the village. The second important temple in Pithapuram is of Kunthi madhava swamy.

Nearest Busstation: PithapuramNearest Railway station: Pithapuram, KakinadaNearest Airport: Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam

There, the big foot-prints are of Gayasura and small ones are of Lord Vishnu.

But, they questioned him where will he give the land? Each and every place on earth has bad incidents in it's history and so unfit for their sacred Yagna.

Gayasura wondered what he should do. He asked them to tell the solution. They told that his body will be the best place! They supported their logic with the boon he got from Vishnu and his wish in giving salvation to everybody! And told that this can be considered as a pious challenge to him and that after the Yagna was over, He can continue to grow in height and give salvation freely to all! He has to face the sins of all people before giving salvation. He has to face many Vighnas (obstacles) both physically and mentally to fullfil his desire. They told that the capabilities of Gayasura can be pre-tested in helping this Yagna.

Gayasura accepted. The Brahmins started doing Yagna.(Legends say His body was cut and thrown in 3 pieces but then that is not correct as He did not do anything wrong to be rendered that punishment only that in his over-enthusiasm and asuric nature to exaggerate anything he tried to obviate and ignore the law of Karma)

Gayasura bore the fire on his body. The Brahmins felt very sad.

Purhuthaamba(Puruhuthika Devi) Puruhuti sati mata Pithikapura samsthita |Putravatpalita devi Bhaktanugrahadayini ||

He is an incarnation of Dattatreya.Sadhana:

Every year in the month of Ashviyuja Navaratri festival is conducted in the temple and on this day sadhana of Puruhutika devi is done which includes Indra as Rishi and Kukkuteswara as Guru.Next comes the temple of Durga devi.

 Kunthimadhava in Garbhagruham

It is a very old temple of Lord Vishnu. It is one of the Pancha Madhava Kshetras. Here the Lord is worshiped by Kunthi devi (Mother of Pandavas). There are Upaalayas(sub-temples) for Lakshmi devi and Goda devi.

Once upon a time there lived a great Rishi by name " Ela " .

Ela Rishi prayed Shiva to mix the river in the Ocean, so that it will become holy.

Then Indra still afraid that Trisiraska was alive, asked Taksha to chop the heads of Trisiraska and bribed him with some boons if he did so .Taksha though hesitated in the begining, was attracted to the bribe offered by Indra and chopped the heads of Trisiraska .Different types of birds originated from the chopped heads of Trisiraska.

This book makes the reader forget this world and brings about a feeling of being in the very presence of Sree Sreepada.

The Sanskrit copy which you are writing will be retained in the form of sound many fathoms deep beneath the audumbara tree in My Maha Sams than.

Auspicious musical notes from musical instruments were heard from the labour room.
