Dear Datta devotees The significance of "dho chowpatty dev lakshmi" is explained in the Telugu book of "Sri Paada Sri Vallabha Charithra" published by Pithapuram samsthan. Lord Sri Paada used to go for "bhiksha" to households of His choice. Instead of asking for "dho chappati de lakshmi" He used to call "dho chow patty dev lakshmi". "Dho" indicates number 2 and "chow" indicates four, while "patty dev" indicates the Lord Parameshwara's number 9. The word "Lakshmi" indicates the number 8, which is a manifestation of "maaya". Hence, the number 2498 seems to be unique. Sri Paada wanted to indicate that He is the one in many forms - in the forms of Gayatri, "paramaatma" and "paraashakti" (the supreme soul and the supreme power). Further, when asked to clarify, why 9 was associated with

the "paramaatma", Ananda Sharma tells Shankara Bhatt (who is the author of Charithra in Sanskrit): "dear Shankara Bhatt! The lord is beyond change and beyond the laws applicable to this universe. 9 is a strange number. 9 multiplied by 1 yields 9 ; and multiplied by 2 yields 18, whose total 1+8 is again 9; multiplied by 3 gives 27, again which totals 9. In this fashion, when 9 is multiplied by any number, the numbers contained in the product again equal 9. That is why, 9 indicates the "brahma tattva". Further Gayatri "kalpa vriksha" has 3 "shakaas" and each "shakaa" has three "upa shaakas". The number 8 indicates illusion (maaya). It is the essence of Anagha Maata. 8 multiplied by 1 yields 8; 8 multiplied by 2 yields 16, whose total is 7; 8 multiplied by 3 gives 24, whose total is 6. Thus, the total of product goes

on decreasing. This expresses the way Anagha maata can reduce the powers of all beings in the universe. A person, however great he may be, can be diminished in stature by maaya. Thus, the narration goes on. My dear friends, the book is simply great. It is written in Telugu in a very lucid style and the contents are divine. One of our group members, Dr Prasad might have translated it into English by this time. I think the Charithra of Sri Paada Vallabha is must read by each and every one Jaya Guru Datta s.sridhar
