Guest guest
THE STORY OF VYAGHREYA SARMA CHAPTER III The SRIPADA SREVALLABHA CHARITAMRUTAM is essentially a telugu translation by Sri Malladhi Govinda Dixitulu of the original Sanskrit manuscript written by SRI SANKAR BHATT.In this book,Sankar Bhatt narrates his experiences of LORD SRIPADA SRIVALLABHA at various times. Before beginning to pen down his thoughts,he prays to Lord Ganesha,Lordess Saraswati,Lord Krishna and to all his Gurus to guide him & help him complete the book. He doubts his competence to undertake writing all the Lord’s leelas when even great scholars failed to do so.He surrenders his heart & soul to Lord Datta & prays that HE should make him write the book as HE WANTS.Sankarbhatt was a smartha Brahmin of Bharadwajasa Gothram and hailed from Karnataka. Sankar Bhatt once visited Udupi & had darshan of Lord Krishna when the lord ordered him to go to Kanyakumari & seek darshan of lordess Kanyakaparameswari there. While he was praying to the lordess with a red flower in his hand,he distinctly heard the lordess ordering him to go to KUWAPUR and seek the darshan of LORD SRIPADA SRI VALLABHA & thus fructify his life’s mission.Sankar Bhatt set out for Kurwapur & reached Marutva malai village. It is believed that when Lord hanuman was carrying the Sanjeevani parvat,a part of it fell down here & hence it is called as marutva meaning MARUTI’S & malai meaning mountain. It was a beautiful mountain with many caves in which many sages were meditating.Sankar Bhatt wanted to take darshan of at least one of those great sages. He approached a cave & noticed a tiger guarding the entrance to the cave.He panicked & started uttering loudly SRI PADA, SRI VALLABHA, DATTA PRABHU.On hearing these words the tiger calmed down and a sage came out of the cave.He extolled Sankar Bhatt saying that he was a very blessed & fortunate man to be able to know about SRIPADA SRIVALLABHA & travel to KURWAPUR to take his darshan. He further told Sankar Bhatt that the tiger was actually a GNANI or scholar & asked him to bow to the tiger. No sooner Sankar Bhatt bowed to the tiger,it uttered “OM” loudly & the whole mountainous area reverberated with “SRIPADA RAJAM SARANAM PRAPADYE”.The tiger turned into an elderly sage & then disappeared. The sage then invited Sankar Bhatt inside the cave.He lit a fire & performed yagna to the pancha bhootas. The sage then blessed Sankar Bhatt & told him that he would surely have darshan of SRIPADA SRIVALLABHA & attain salvation. Sankar Bhatt then asked the sage who was the sage in the form of the tiger & who was SRIPADA SRIVALLABHA.The sage then said “In Atreyapuram on the banks of the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh,a Brahmin BOY was born in Kasyapasa gothra & he was named VYAGHRESWARA SARMA.Though the father was a vedic scholar, the son was imbecile.”VyaghreswaraSarma Ahambho Abhivayey” was all that he could utter. He was the butt of all the jokes of his peers and was teased by all the village folks.Even his parents were ashamed of him.One night in his dream he saw a bright boy who advised him to go to Badarinath. He left for Badarinath and all along his journey he was accompanied by a dog.Around the same time one sage came with his disciples to Urvasi river to take bath.Vyagheswar immediately prayed to his feet and sought to become his SISHYA or disciple. As soon as the sage accepted Vyagreswar as his sishya, the dog vanished. The sage told Vyaghreswar that the dog was his previous birth’s good side & that the good he had done in his last birth brought him to the sage and that all this was due to the grace of SRIPADA SRIVALLABHA. Then Sankar Bhatt asked the sage who was SRIPADA SRI VALLABHA.To this the sage said “SRIPADA SRIVALLABHA is an incarnation of LORD DATTATREYA.He also told him that in tretayug,Bharadwaja Maharshi performed the SAVITRIKATHAKA CHAYANAM in Pithapuram and invited lord SIVA & LORDESS PARVATI who were immensely pleased with the yagna & blessed Bharadwaja Maharshi that several siddha purushas, scholars & pious people would be born in his clan.He further said that when kaliyuga ends & satya yuga starts,Lord Datta would come in human form as SRI PADA SRI VALLABHA to Pithapuram. He asked Vyaghreswar to sit in the cave and meditate.Vyaghreswar saw that the sages were adorning tiger skin & using it as their seat too,he wanted to turn into a tiger(VYAGHRA meaning tiger) through his meditation & thus be of some use to his gurus and sages. He prayed & meditated immensely & finally the LORD turned him into a tiger. He learnt “OM” & SRIPADA RAJAM SARANAM PRAPADYEY” from the sage. In the tiger form, he reached Kurwapur and sought refuge at SRIPADA’s feet. SRIPADA mounted on the tiger and crossed the Krishna river and reached Kurwapur. No sooner Lord Sripada alighted from the tiger, the tiger turned into a human being who fell at the lord’s feet and begged him to use his tiger skin as his seat. Sripada agreed to this & told him that he could change forms as & when he wished and asked him to go to the Himalayas & seek darshan of great sages meditating there and to protect all those sages while they were engrossed in deep meditation. Sripada also told him that in his previous birth as a human, he was capturing wild animals like tigers, torturing them and skinning them off and hence he was born as a tiger in the present birth. But because of the offering of tiger skin to a sage to be used as his aasan or seat, he attained punya & was blessed by the sage that he would have darshan of the LORD.Thus even an animal like tiger was granted moksha or salvation by LORD SRIPADA SRIVALLABHA.
