WHO IS GURU ? WHY DOES ONE NEED A GURU ? The word GURU comes from GA+ RA+VU.GA represents GANESHA who confers success,RA denotes AGNI (FIRE) that decimates all sins & VU stands for the unmanifest Vishnu. Thus GURU is a personfication of the above 3 elements. Thus the GURU MANTRA is potentiated by

Ganesha,Agni & Vishnu & it's recantation confers on the recantor all the FOUR PURUSHARDHAS of Righteousness, wealth,Desire & liberation. Guru is Brahma-the creator,Guru is Vishnu -the perpetuator & Guru is Maheshwara-the destroyer. The power of the GURU is infinite.HE shows the path to discrimination, devotion, detachment & deliverance (moksha). For learning the sacred scriptures, the guidance & help of a GURU is A MUST.The real meaning & innate beauty of the scriptures will not dawn on the disciple without

his GURU's help & guidance. The disciple's own intellect will not suffice & he may even be mislead.Once the disciple adheres to the path prescibed in the scriprures & shown by his GURU,HE SURE CAN CROSS THIS OCEAN OF WORLDLY ENTANGLEMENT.The GURU illuminates the path for the disciple & lends him his unstinted support while treading on that path. The Guru makes the complex scriptures simple enough for his disciple to understand. There are 9 types of Bhakti -Shravana(hearing),Kirtana(Praying),Smarana(Remembering), Padasevana(Resorting to the

feet),Archana(Worship), Namaskara(Bowing), Dasya(Service), Sakhyata(Friendship) & Atmanivedana(Surrender of the Self). If any of these is faithfully followed, the LORD will be pleased & manifest HIMSELF. All the Sadhanas like JAPA(Vocal Worship),TAPA(Penance),YOGA etc are useless if not accompanied by total devotion(BHAKTI). As Sreeram Kalaga wrote “”Bhakti should lead to Jnana (i.e.) the ability to distinguish between right and wrong and between the true and transient things.Jnana in turn must lead to Vairagya (i.e.)

a sense of detachment from the tempting forces of nature and realizing the first step towards moksha.Vairagya usually leads to penance or meditation where the aspirant focuses his mind on the Lord constantly. In all the previous Yugas (Treta, Dwapara or Kruta), one or a combination of these virtues entitled a person to strive for moksha. But not in Kali Yuga. Unfortunately, many are not wise enough to grasp this. People are so mired in age-old beliefs and dogmas that they fail to see a fundamental Truth. The need for a Sadguru. What they fail to realize is: § You will not attain moksha just on the strength of your bhakti or jnana or vairagya or whatever. No. § You will not get moksha by performing a thousand poojas, yajnas or homas. § Or by visiting a hundred temples and holy places or dipping in dozens of rivers and lakes or fasting unto death. Many people read Vishnu Sahasranaamam or Lalitha Sahasranaamam or The Gita and believe that it is more than enough to enter Heaven. No, it is not. Visiting holy places can help us experience what is called “Sthaana

Mahima” or the purity/greatness of location. That’s all. Reading scriptures can at best help you feel momentary calm and feel a certain nearness to divinity. But that is not moksha. Moksha means “Janma Rahityam” (i.e.) no re-birth. And nothing – I repeat – nothing can lead you to that stage except the grace of a Sadguru. Only by serving a Sadguru can one qualify to aspire for salvation. Lord

Krishna himself prescribed that in The Gita (Verse 4:34). If we looks carefully, we can see that Krishna did not recommend books or poojas or holy places or penance to Arjuna. He just spoke of serving a Jnani (i.e.) a Sadguru! Even fully-liberated souls like Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi – despite their inherent divinity – served their respective Gurus. The concept of Guru Parampara in our culture also indicates this. But why? Why do we need a Teacher to show us the way? Books can only give us superficial knowledge. Temples bring us transient relief of being in the presence of divinity; that’s all. Scriptures speak of

the Ultimate Truth only in abstract terms. Bhajans, no matter how devotional they are, give only temporary joy. Rituals may help in satisfying karmic needs but nothing else. Fasting serves no purpose other than insulting food, which is truly described as “parabrahma swaroopa”. Aatmajnana (self-realization) is not something that can be obtained by objective means. It is not something that can be taught or found. It is a state of bliss – Sat Chit Ananda – and can only be experienced, under the guidance of a Sadguru. Legend has it that Shirdi Saibaba just tapped Saint Meher Baba once on the head and uttered one word “Parvardigar”. That’s all it is needed

for Meher Baba to experience Aatmajnana! It is only to emphasize this importance of a Sadguru that Lord Dattatreya took the form of various Divine Masters – Sripada Srivallabha, Nrusimha Saraswati, Swami Samartha (Akkalkot) and Shirdi Saibaba. All these teachers exemplified the role of a Jnani to show us the way out of the misery, lurking temptations, dense jungles and pitfalls of this Kaliyuga. Gurur Saakshaat Parabrahma. Nothing else matters. “”- SREERAM

KALAGA Gurus like

SRI DATTA,SRI PADA SRI VALLABHA,SRI NARASIMHA SARASWATI,SAI BABA are incarnations.Even after they have left their human embodiment, they continue to guide people in a subtler form. That is the role of Sadguru. Sri Krishna as an incarnation changed the social order through Mahabharat but thereafter, His role remains till today as a ‘Sadguru’ in Geeta. While following Geeta millions of Hindus are following the path laid down by the Sadguru aspect of Sri Krishna. Similarly, through Bible, Koran, Guru Grantha Saheb, Christ, Prophet Mohammed and the Sikh Masters continue their divine roles. The followers of these religions don’t worship numerous deities, they only pray to God, the Almighty and follow the path prescribed by the Prophets or Sadgurus and their preachings. Search of God, search of self and peace need not necessarily be a difficult or complicated process. The Incarnations/Sadgurus have always tried to offer the simplest path to humanity. The easiest way to spiritual evolution is: 1. To believe that the Sadguru is the divine incarnation to lead people towards temporal and spiritual development. 2. To follow the path laid down by him, as reflected in his earthly conduct and preachings. 3. To understand

that no man how ever he strives, can evolve in the spiritual field beyond a certain limit without the help and kindness of a Sadguru. Even incarnations like Sri Krishna and Sri Rama, in the process of experiencing the God state in them, had to be helped by Sandeepani and Vasishta, the Sadgurus of their time. 4. To focus the entire spiritual consciousness on the Sadgurus, both in Sakara (formed) or Nirakar (formless), and worship them. 5. To believe that the Guru is the repositor of all divine powers and therefore, He alone should be made the mainstay of one’s life. All needs, worries and questions should be projected

towards him. Experience has shown that the people devoted to Sadgurus, evolve faster in the spiritual field than those following other methods, because such devotees believe in surrender to divinity which is the ultimate requirement for spiritual evolution. I am just reminded of a short story where a father & his daughter were crossing an unstable bridge and the father asked the daughter to hold his hand. But the daughter asked the father to hold her hand instead as she was sure that her father would never loosen his grip & let go her hand even if the

bridge was collapsing and thus she was sure to cross the bridge) All of us wish to walk the path of life, holding GURU DATTA’s hand. But when difficulties occur, we might stumble and lose the hold. SO let us pray to GURU DATTA here and now that HE should rather hold our hand forever, for then we will be safe on every bridge of life. Even if we stumble and falter, He will be there with us always. All we need to do here is to stretch out our hand to our SADGURU with love and intense trust in eyes and with the Heart of a ToddlerFor the essence of trust is not in its bind, but in its bond.So LET US ALL BOND AT THE FEET OF LORD DATTA & SURRENDER OURSELVES TO HIS

DIVINITY. As our own Guruji Subrahmanyam Bharatula mentioned Lord Dattatreya, the teacher of teachers, had been Guru to Brahma, Parashurama, Prahlada, Kings Yadu, Alarka, Kartaveeryaarjuna and carved outa stupendously marvelous Guru sampradaaya and Guru parampara throught all the ages.Lord Dattatreya is Bhukthi Mukthi Pradaatha. Smarana Maatra santhushta. Smarthrugaami. Guna and Nirguna, Saakaara and Niraakara are all his form. He showed the path of moving from Guna to Nirguna and Saakaara to Niraakaara. This can be observed in "Shree Datta YOgam". Shree Datta Yogam clearly explaining to everyone "how one can extract spirituality from materialistice life". SRI GUROHO PARATHARAM NAASTHI NASSTHI TATHWAH PARAM GURUM || THERE IS NOTHING THAT TRANSCENDS THE GURU, THERE NO PHILOSOPHY IN LIFE OTHER THAN THE GURU. Lord Vishnu himself told directly that YADAA MAMASHIVASYAAPI BRAHMANO BRAHMANASYAHI ANUGRAHO BHAVENRINNAM SEVYATHE SADGURUSTHADAA| | Meaning: When I (Lord Vishnu) bless amna, Shiva or Brahma becomes conscious of the guru. But by his guru's grace, a man get any of the three of us grant anything. As Lord Dattatreya is a combination of Guru and Daiva, we are calling him as 'JAI GURU DEVA DATTA'. Some sadhaks are treating Dattatreya as their own guru and doing sadhana. The two letters DA and TTA are more powerful and one can attain BRAHMA GNAANA by reciting the name of LORD DATTATREYA. One can observe the same in the words of Mahadeva told to SHRI SHuka Maharshi as DATTA DATTA IDAM VAAKYAM, THAARAKAM SARVA DEHINAAAM, SHRADHAA YUKTHO JAPE NITYAM, DATTA ITYAKSHARA DWAYAM. DATTATREYAA THAVA SHARANAM|| DATTA NAADHA THAVA SHARANAM||- “Subrahmanyam. Bharathula” “GURU DATTATRYA TAVA SHARANAM” “ SADGURUNADHA TAVA SHARANAM” – DATTA SEVAKA PRK PRASAD -----Fight back spam!
