Guest guest
SREE DATTATREYA'S FIRST AVATAR - SRIPADA SRIVALLABHA's BIRTH "Yada yada hi dharmasya .................... So said Lord Krishna in the Bhagwat Gita. The Almighty descended to earth in various incarnations to save the righteous.First he took Matsyavatar(FISH),then Koormavatar(Tortoise),then wild boar & then Narasimhavatar etc.To uplift morally the depraved human beings,Lord took incarnations of RAMA,KRISHNA,BUDHA in different yugas(eons). In Kali yuga-the present yuga or eon,to morally uplift the corrupt & debased humans,Almighty took the form of SRIGURU.He was born to a devout brahmin couple Appalaraju Sarma & Sumati in PITHAPURAM in the East Godavari District of Andhra pradesh.Pithapuram is the seat of one of the eighteen forms of "Shiva Sakti" named Puru Hutika & it is also the abode of Gayasura's feet (often referred as Pada Gaya). It is widely believed that if people perform obsequies to their ancestors here, the ancestors attain salvation. Appalaraju Sarma hailed from the Gandikoti family in Ainavilli village & was a Velanati Vaideeki, smartha brahmin. He was an Yajurvedi & his gothram was Bharadwajasa. He belonged to the Apasthamba lineage. He lost both his parents when young. He used to worship Lord DATTA everyday. One day while he was in meditation after his prayers,He saw Lord Datta ordering him to go to Pithapuram & learn vedas from MALLADHI BAPANAVADHANULU who was a well known vedic pandit.Accordingly he went to Pithapuram & sought permission to become Bapanavadhanulu's sishya or disciple. He was readily admitted to the vedic school.During his veda pathana or veda fellowship, Bapanavadhunulu took immense liking for him & offered his daughter Sumatirani in marriage. Both Bapanavadhanulu & his wife Rajamamba were also velanati vaideeki, smartha brahmins & haritasa gothram subjects.Appalaraju Sarma married Sumati.Sumati was a very pious woman & was very devoted to her husband who was an ardent DATTA BHAKTA.She offered food to monks & mendicants very generously. The couple had lost many sons and had only two living, but one was lame and the other was blind. One day,the couple were performing obsequies to their ancestors & several brahmins were invited for the ceremony. These brahmins are deemed as representatives of the departed ancesters and are sumptuously fed meals after the obsequies are performed. It is believed that these brahmins should be served food first & then only others should be served.Any deviation from this is forbidden as it is thought to spoil the sanctity of the ritual. While the ritual was being performed by Appalaraju Sarma inside the house,LORD DATTA appeared at the threshold of the house in the guise of a sadhu & asked for food.Sumati came out on hearing the call of the sadhu & on seeing the sadhu was overcome with conviction that the sadhu was LORD DATTA in guise and none else. She immediately offered food to him even before the invited brahmins were fed.Sumati's faith moved the LORD & he at once revealed his resplendent form to Sumati. She immediately grasped the LORD's FEET in her hands with deep devotion.Lord Datta was greatly impressed and elated. He raised her from the ground with his hands & in great elation addressed her as "Mother".He then asked her to ask him a boon that he would grant immediately.Sumati extolled the Lord & asked him to grant her HIS Motherhood as he had addressed her as "Mother".The Lord was happy after hearing Sumati's supplication & said "A son will be born to you soon who will equal me in all respects, preach the divine path & will become famous. You will have to honour his words or else he will not live with you ".So saying Lord Datta disappeared. Soon after the rituals were over,Sumati narrated this incident to her husband.Appalaraju Sarma was convinced that only LORD DATTA comes at noon time to a brahmin's house seeking food & that he comes in different forms and he was confident that the sadhu was none other than LORD DATTA himself & was happy that his wife had offered food to Lord Datta who was incarnarnation of Lord Vishnu to whom the offerings were meant to be made. Shortly afterwards Sumati was pregnant & nine months later, she delivered a baby boy on avery auspicious day -the fourth day(Chaturthi) of the first fortnight of Bhadrapada month in the year 1320 A.D.The boy's birth star was CHITTA (TULA LAGNA) & his ascendent was in Simha Rasi.Astrologers & priests prophesised that the boy would become a revered sage & impart spiritual education to the whole world as a Universal Perceptor. As the boy was having auspicious signs in the feet,he was named SREEPADA.As he was considered by his father & mother to be an incarnation of Maha Vishnu, the spouse of Goddess of Wealth Maha LAXMI,he was also named SRIVALLABHA. He was very spiritual minded unlike other children of his age. When he was 8 years old,his father performed his sacred thread ceremony. He observed Brahmacharya(Celibacy) & mastered all the vedas & sastras in no time. When his parents wanted to perform his wedding,he declined to get married saying " I am not to marry a human bride as detachment is my bride,I have to wed the beautiful "SREEYOGA" who is a treasure of YOGA, In all other women,I see my mother,I am an ascetic & an inviolable bachelor".He asked the parents to permit him to leave home to pursue his spiritual path. The parents then remembered LORD DATTAS words that they will have to honour the boy's words. They were downcast in sorrow on hearing their son's words and pleaded with him to stay on to take care of them & his two older infirm brothers.SRIPADA just looked at his infirm brothers & they soon became normal0the lame one got back normal gait and the blind one his eyesight. He blessed both of them & told his parents that they would be blessed with three daughters and that the entire family would be happy & prosperous. He then sought his mother's permission to leave & as soon as she permitted,SRIPADA disappeared and reached Banares. -----Fight back spam!
