Dear Aarathi Ma, (Homeless man in USA) You may do the Datta-worship thus even if you are in USA. I too am in USA and do all poojas here effecticely. You may feed the poor in India through your mother. But even in USA there are homelss people whom you can give food too for your satisfaction. Ok, I now will elaborate the method of Sri Guru Charitra Parayana Firstly, do the recitation with a pure heart and devotion, completing it in one day or two days or three days. Datta Maharaj will be gratified. If it is not possible to finish off the whole parayana in one,two or three days mentioned above, then complete it easily in a week and you will haveimmense good fortune on a continuing basis. Since this whole book is like a Mantra by itself, it is a powerful book and should be read with some Niyamas. These rules are given in the book itself. The book is to be read either in 7 days (called Saptaha) or in 3 days or 2 days or in one day as mentioned supra. Lord Dattatreya will fulfill the heart’s desire and the fear of the worldly existence will be destroyed. Above is a sanskrit version of Indukoti stotra which can be read at the end of each parayan. Begin the recitation on a Thursday, in the early morning after a bath. Sit on your ‘asan’ (seat for prayer), after quickly completing your usual morning routine. Before starting to read, take clean bath everyday. All this comes by default. Clear and clean the area where you will sit to read this and the book must be read at the same place daily. Never place the sacred book on the ground and it should be closed after the reading is done. While reading do not Talk with others and have your complete focus and concentration on the book which is as good as you are tlaking with Lord Datta Prabhu Himself. Do not have sexual union with your spouse and one should avoid eating onions, garlic, egg and other non-vegetarian foods during the period of Saptahika. Sleep on the floor during this period of reading (no cozy bedding etc.) Make a pleasing, large canopy with banana plants, ‘kadali’ or if it is not possible in USA then with a nice silken green cloth, and another beautiful cloth covering over it and let it be welldecorated. In it, let there be a raised platform (for the book) and decorate all the four sides of it with colourful ‘rangoli’,which are pleasing for the eyes. Making an image of Lord Dattatreya or taking a beautiful picture of him, place it carefully on the high platform. Make obeisance to him with love.Tying the book in a silken cloth, place it near the Image. After worshipping both with ‘pancha upachar’, commence the reading.Pancha upacharas or five upacharas refers to (1) Gandha (Chandana), (2) Pushpa (flower), (3) Dhupa (incense), (4) Dipa (lamp) and Naivedya (food). Observe the holy vows for eight days, having only milk orfruits or roasted grain of any one kind, eating only once or having only one meal as in convinient for you. Bhakthi is very important not all these "religious stunts" Facing the east and keeping the image of the Lord in theheart, do the recitation of the

book with a calm mind and with joy. During the seven days, read the first eight chapters on thefirst day, then the next eight on the second day, followedby next seven on the third day. Then eight, six, eight andseven chapters on the following four days, and only‘Avataranika’ (epilogue)on the eighth day.All chapters should be finished completely and nothing should be left half-finished. On the eighth day, at the end of the observance of vows and of the offering of ‘naivedya’ to Lord Dattatreya, feed friends, relatives and Sad-Brahmins with delicacies and give ‘dakshina’ to them to the best of one’s ability. Inviting the Vedic Brahmins, have them chant the Vedas atnight, offer them sugar flavoured milk and give them arespectful send-off, after they are well satisfied in bodyand mind.If this is not possible in USA then send

a small donation to some good vedic philanthropic organization. Lord Dattatreya has four dogs representing the vedas and this is doen to represent this symbolically. Finally, after doing obeisance at one's Guru's Feet, offerhim appropriate ‘dakshina’ or send it to some good Datta-temple.The purpose of "Dakshina" is to lose one's material clingings to money and to aid in Karmic removal. After the end of Saptaha, pooja of the book to be performed and one couple should be called and given food and dakshina. Lord Dattatreya will be gratified thereby, and he will bless the devotee. The snake in the form of the worldly existence willbe destroyed and the treasure of liberation will

be revealed to him. These points have been taken from "Gurucharitra Avataranika" of the original Guru Charitra itself. I have added my inputs here and there to make it more clear. Hope this helps... Yours in Datta... Offer a light or candle, joss sticks, flowers and sandal paste. Invoke His presence by chanting the verse in praise of the Guru i.e Gurur Brahma' meaning 'Guru is the creator (Brahma), the preserver (Vishnu) and the annihilator (Maheshwara) ; Guru is the Absolute Himself. Adorations to such a Guru'Prayer to ganesh. Then offer a few pieces of candy to Him. A 7-day Saptaha means you begin reading on a Thursday and end it on a Wednesday. The sequence of reading is as follows:

1st Day -- Chap. 1 to 9 2nd Day -- Chap 10 to 21 3rd Day -- Chap 22 to 29 4th Day -- Chap 30 to 35 5th Day -- Chap 36 to 38 6th Day -- Chap 39 to 43 7th Day -- Chap 44 to 52 On the concluding day, feed three or at least one pious brahmin, sadhu or a poor man. We must look upon him as the form of Sree Guru. We keep reading like this over and over again. One may read it once in 3 days or even a day, ardently asking His guidance. Can anyone help me if i have to make any corrections as i am doing this puja for the first time.As i am staying in states , here they said to offer food to the poor, so can i ask my mother who is in india to do on the 7th day on behalf of me.People say that we should not eat that and this when doing dattatriya puja, iam unware of this things ,can anyone help me to know what not to eat.Can we eat food like puri, potato curry, eggs, ravva dosa

etcSorry for asking questions. Please don't ignore this message. Please help.thanks for the guidance.Wish you happy new year to one and all.
