Some background:

Pujya Ranga Avadhoota Maharaj revered as a avadhuta saint from Nareshwar

(located on the banks of Mother river Narmadaa), once performed 108 paaraayans

of Shri Guru Charitra. Incidently this Guru Charitra 'pothi' was was given by

Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi to Ranga Avadhut's maternal uncle who had no idea why

Sai Baba gave this GUru charitra to him (it is amazing how the saints know of

all the past and future). After Ranga Avadhut Maharaj finished 108 paaraayaNs,

his Guru, Shree Vasudevaanand Sarasvati Maharaj came in his dreams and

inspired him to write 'Shree GuruLeelaamrita' for the benefit of mankind. Even

now Many devotees of Lord Dattatreya continue to perform paaraayaN of this

great 'granth' of Guruleelaamrita (sacred text written in poetic style in

Gujarati).

About Datta-baavanii:

Once, a family in Gujarat were suffering from their long lasting troubles

which were beyond their control and were helpless to overcome it. Pujya Ranga

Avadhut Maharaj came to know about their suffering of this family. A saint who

is forever merciful and commpassionate always strives to allievate the

suffering of mankind that are beyond human capacity. He went back to his cave

and in his deep meditation and love and oneness with Lord Dattatreya wrote the

famous 52 couplets glorifying Lord Dattatreya's leelas also popularly known as

Datta baavani (The number 52 also signifies that there are 52 thursdays or

baavan guruvaars in a year during which one should recite this to remain

mindful of Guru's grace and Lord Dattatreya's leelas). The power of

Datta-baavani recitation with love overcame the difficulties of this family

within a short time. Soon the recitation of Datta-baavani was taken up by many

families only to discover that it had miraclous power of healing, happiness

and satisfaction. The 'smratrugaami' power of GOD Dattatreya was experienced

by many through this Datta-baavani.

Now millions of people from Gujarat and Maharashtra sing it regularly as their

habit (atleast on every Thursday). It is recommended that Datta-baavani is

sung after lighting a dhoop(agarbatti/incense) and prefereably as a family

satsang in one place (if possible in front of their family deity). It is

desired that all the family members immerse their minds in devotional

visualization of Guru Dattatreya's leelas and glory as you sing/read each

verse. This has provided a lot of relief to many Dattatreya devotees from the

torture of this Kaliyuga and will certainly provide succour to suffering

people. When someone asked Pujya Ranga Avadhut Maharaj to describe 'mahima'

(significance) of Datta baavani, he compared regular recitation of

Dattabaavani (through devotion and affection) as having the power of a

'atom-bomb' to dispel all the miseries, worries, sorrows or suffering within a

short time. Pujya Prem Avadhut Maharaj who served Ranga Avadhut Maharaj says

that GOD Dattatreya's grace is forever readily waiting for you to ask for his

help. GOD Dattatreya is only as far from you as the time it takes for you to

call/remember him. (bus shirf pukaarne kii der hai, bhagavaan ke aane kii der

nahi).
