Guest guest
Sure and noted, now also read below article.Remember we in India get bananas riped using dangerous chemicals. This is a hard fact. Pune Mirro: Even as we are yet to recover from the reports of rampant milk adulteration in the city and the district, another shocking revelation has come to the fore following a raid by the health department of Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) on Wednesday afternoon. And this time, it’s the humblest of all fruits under the scanner. Ever fallen for the luscious, golden ripe bananas at your fruit-seller’s? Well, eating them may be as good as consuming slow poison! KCB health officials have recovered 100 litres of calcium carbide, a chemical used to ripen fruits artificially, from a banana warehouse near Dargah Colony in Khadki on Wednesday. Despite a ban, fruit sellers continue with the practice of ripening fruits with calcium carbide and the KCB raid has only established this further. When you think of the 160 tonnes of bananas supplied to Pune everyday (as per Gopal Kulkarni, in-charge banana section of Pune Agriculture Food & Marketing Committee), most of which are consumed in the city, you have every reason to get alarmed. Following the raid, the warehouse has been sealed and the samples, of the fruit found there, have been sent to the chemical laboratory. The raid was conducted after local residents demanded immediate action against wholesale fruit vendors for their illegal practice. The warehouse belongs to wholesale vendor Nandlal Gupta who has been allegedly ripening the fruit using the chemical and selling it to fruit sellers all over the city. Social activist Prabhakar Polkam said, “There have been complaints against Gupta. The filth and stench in which he had been operating his warehouse raises serious health concerns, not only of the consumers who consume the fruit, but also to local residents in the area. We also came to know that Gupta had been hiring minors, mainly schoolchildren, for work at his warehouse. The residents have complained several times to the Board and action has been finally taken.†Health officer of KCB, Villas Khandode said, “We took action Polkam informed us about the use of chemicals at the warehouse. A team of health officers conducted the raid around 12 pm on February 10, who caught Gupta and some labourers red-handed using the chemical to ripen the bananas. Apart from the chemical solution, the officials also recovered boxes of the chemical in powder form which have been sent to experts to be verified. Specimens of bananas found at the warehouse have also been sent to be tested for their chemical levels. Strict action against Gupta will be taken as soon as the test reports come. If found guilty, Gupta will be handed over to the police. We have sealed the warehouse and the refrigerator used to store the bananas after dipping them into the chemical water solution.†
