Once upon a time there was a poor Brahmin man who was an ardent devotee of Mother Durga. He lived with his wife and he had a young daughter named Sarva Mangala. Sarva Mangala was married to the son of the mayor. For many months he was saving money for durga puja during navaratri. He wanted to do a puja filled with devotion and share prasaad with all in his village. He counted his savings and went to get all the items to prepare for the puja. First he went to the man who was making durga idols for worship and asked him for a beautiful Mother Durga. That person said - Take whatever you like, you don;t have to pay. He said, " No, i will give you some money " and brought home a beautiful durga murti. He and his wife wanted very much that their married daughter should come home and be with them to do the puja. But they were concerned that since she may have other commitments in the household of her in-laws. The Brahmani (wife of the Brahmin) got her periods and it was a custom then that she could not participate in making the prasad or the puja. She told her husband, " Now you have to get Sarva Mangala to come here to help. How else can you do the puja. " The man went to Sarva Mangala's in-laws house and asked for permission to take his daughter home. But she was the daughter-in-law of the house and they had only one son, so they said it would not be possible to send her. He was dissappointed and walked slowly towards his home. At that time, he heard a voice from the back saying, " Wait Baba (father), I am coming. " It was Sarva Mangala... .....to be continued... " He turned around and saw Sarva Mangala, his daughter. They walked together joyously to celebrate Navaratri. Sarva Mangala helped her father will all aspects of the worship -- With devotion and love, the father decorated Durga Maa and his daughter helped him make garlands and different food offerings and join in the worship. With eyes filled with tears and heart abounding with joy, he worshipped Divine Mother on the 6th, 7th and 8th days of Navaratri. He had to distribute prasaad (food sanctified by worship and offering to Divine Mother) to the entire village but the quantity did not look enough. What to do? Sarva Mangala said, " Don't worry Daddy, just give me the serving vessels, I will take care of everything. " All the villagers sat in a line and were served the bhog and amazingly everyone ate all they wanted and felt satisfied and blessed. After Annapurna Puja, food was offered to Divine Mother and before serving everybody, Sarva Mangala started eating! The father was shocked, he said " What are you doing? " Sarva Mangala said, " I am so hungry with fasting. I am eating. " He complained to the girl's mother. She said, " Let her be, she is hungry. Don't get angry now. " A second time, the father said, " Why are you eating now? " The daughter replied, " Father i am hungry. I am enjoying this food. " The father got really angry, he said loudly, " What, you are eating again and so much? " At that time, Sarva Mangala just left from that place. Her mother said to father, " Why did you get so angry. Our daughter has gone back now. " The father went to her in-laws house to find her and apologize. But, there his daughter said, " Oh Father, i never came with you. I have been here all these days. " The father realized WHO had come to help him prepare the worship, serve the food and eat the prasad! His eyes were filled with tears of devotion and wonder at Divine Mother's unfathomable grace!
